We’ve all considered selling our souls for musical success from time to time. But in Black Cat Social Club by Christopher Painter, Bob Quinn, Meg Casey, Fred C. Stesing, and Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou, one of the band members actually follows through with it!
The graphic novel from Humanoids follows “a trio of punk rock witches who cast spells with their songs to battle corporate demon jerks, defeat rival witch bands, save the world, and get to the next gig.” Scheduled for publication on Tuesday, April 25th, 2023, you can get your first look at the comic today, right here at The Beat!

Here’s the description from the publisher:
“The BLACK CAT SOCIAL CLUB have been at this “band thing” for a while! But despite their kick-ass skills (and some enchanting spells), they’ve been struggling to get their big break. When a band member sells her soul to a demon for more magical power, they find out that their magical success may actually be a part of a demonic plan fueling the end of the world… If you’ve ever wished Josie and the Pussycats had more demons or Buffy was fronting a punk rock band, you’ve found your next favorite book in BLACK CAT SOCIAL CLUB.”
Meanwhile, the press release contains these details about two of the creators:
- “Painter is a two-time Annie-nominated writer of films, television, games, and theme park experiences, including Disney’s Dreamlight Valley. He’s worked for the Walt Disney Company, Nickelodeon, Cartoon Network, Warner Bros., and MGM.
- “Quinn used to make video games, now he writes and draws comics. He’s drawn titles including Uncanny X-Men, Ms. Marvel, Red Sonja, and the Lone Ranger.”
