Netflix has announced a new stop-motion series starring two of Sanrio’s most beloved characters: My Melody and Kuromi. The series, titled My Melody & Kuromi, premieres globally in July and celebrates milestone anniversaries for the characters—My Melody’s 50th and Kuromi‘s 20th.
Tomoki Misato, the director of Pui Pui Molcar, helms the series and expressed excitement, saying, “I’m thrilled to announce this project in this important year marking My Melody’s 50th anniversary and Kuromi’s 20th. This momentous project motivated all of us to come together, take on various challenges, and push the envelope with stop-motion. I hope everyone will enjoy this exciting story set in our handcrafted Mariland, the thrilling action that pushes the limits of stop-motion, and, of course, the cute and dynamic characters.”
Alongside Misato, award-winning playwright Shuko Nemoto wrote the script. Nemoto shared, “Because of the pandemic, I couldn’t meet with director Misato or the producers in person. But we connected remotely each week, carefully building this together. The project is filled with love for the world of My Melody, beloved by people of all ages. I believe everyone, from adults to children, will have favorite scenes and lines.”
This project marks a first for Toruku, a branch of WIT Studio, best known for producing the hit anime Spy x Family. Toruku takes on its first stop-motion animated series with this venture.
My Melody & Kuromi debuts in July 2025 on Netflix.
