It was April 1st of last year, when Drew McWeeny over HitFix rolled out a report announcing that Game of Thrones’ Maisie Williams and The Witch‘s Anya Taylor-Joy would be joining the cast of Josh Boone’s New Mutants, the latest expansion on the X-Men film franchise.

Fox quickly moved to quash this supposed rumor.

Well, here we are, a year later…and guess what? Drew was right on the money as Fox has indeed announced that Williams will be playing Wolfsbane and Taylor-Joy is Majick in an adaptation that looks to be hewing pretty closely to the Claremont/McLeod/Sienkiewicz source in terms of team line-up.

Considering how correct that initial report was, I think it’s worth paying attention to the fact that it also stated that Sunspot, Cannonball, and Mirage will also be part of the team. At this point, it’s only a matter of time before the casting for those roles are also announced.

After the absolutely dismal X-Men: Apocalypse (and I do mean *dismal*, I thought it was the worst movie I saw last year), the franchise got an incredible shot in the arm with Logan and Legion. Will New Mutants continue this sudden and unexpected hot streak? If Josh Boone gets the same latitude that James Mangold and Noah Hawley received; quite possibly!

New Mutants hit theaters on April 13th of next year.

  1. Too many characters and it will show in the final product. I wonder how much Fox will bastardize this newest entry?

  2. Wow, “dismal”? I’d love to hear what people hated about it Apocalypse. I liked it. Not one of the best, not DoFT, or X2, or Wolverine, or First Class, but still above average.

There was stuff I really liked. Magneto’s scenes in the forest and concentration camp. Mystique’s arc from reluctant hero to leader.

  3. Please don’t include Warlock. We don’t need an alien “Transformer” in the movie.
Just Dani, Sam, Bobby, Rahne, Illyana and maybe Doug.

  4. Kyle!!! You’ve got add Sal Buscema to the Claremont/McLeod/Sienkiewicz mix. Not as revolutionary as the Sienkiewicz run but Sal did significant work for the book (The New Mutants going to the Massachusetts Academy to save Kitty and Doug being two of my favorite issues of the series).

  5. Since the phrase “new mutants” was used in Logan, I was kinda hoping we’d be seeing X-23, Rictor, and the rest again. Still, I’ve never been disappointed by Maisie Williams, so this should be good.

  6. Anyone else thinking that 11 months is a tight turnaround for this movie, considering all the casting hasn’t been announced and I don’t think it’s started filming yet? I won’t be surprised if it ends up with a revised date.
