new mutantsI woke up this morning to some news where I had to check the date on when it was reported, but it looks like Drew over at HitFix got this in a bit before the clock struck midnight on the east coast, so here we go…

Earlier yesterday, Drew had already reported that Alexandra Shipp (who plays Storm in X-Men: Apocalypse) and James McAvoy (Charles Xavier) would be reprise their roles for Josh Boone’s New Mutants, but now he’s added that Game of Thrones star Maisie Williams has signed on as Wolfsbane and The Witch‘s Anya Taylor-Joy will be Majick. Additionally, the report states that Sunspot, Cannonball, and Mirage will round out the lineup, though those roles have yet to be cast. Adan Canto played Sunspot in X-Men: Days of Future Past, but there’s no word on possible reprisal.

Williams is a big fan favorite on Game of Thrones and I found Taylor-Joy to be enchanting to watch on-screen in The Witch, one of the few films this year I’ve felt particularly strongly about. These are tremendous additions for what will surely be a fairly young cast.

Boone is currently co-writing New Mutants with Knate Gwaltney. You can expect to see the film sometime in 2018.

Update: Fox has apparently shot down these rumors per Nerdist, but I’d keep my eye on it nevertheless.

  1. Thanks Chris! I just caught that a short bit ago (the perils of these reports that happen while I’m tucked away in bed).

  2. Amazing to think it was 35 years ago that the New Mutants lineup consisted of more females than males, and only one of the team, Cannonball, was a WASP male. Try that now and the misogynist-revanchist wing of the net would never let Marvel hear the end of it.
