Mooncakes, the popular webcomic by Suzanne Walker and Wendy Xu, is finally coming to print. Lion Forge has announced release dates in October for the print collection of the queer fantasy/romance comic. The book releases in comic shops on October 2nd, and to the wider bookstore market on October 15th. The publisher has also released a first look at the cover for the collected edition.

Mooncakes centers on Nova Huang (a witch), and her childhood crush, Tam Lang (a werewolf). After the pair are unexpectedly reunited after a number of years apart, the two must together navigate a world of magic and mysticism—and a budding romance.

The Mooncakes webcomic began running in 2015. Originally published twice a month, the comic went on hiatus at the end of 2016, and the print version of the strip was announced by Lion Forge (whose sister company, Syndicated Comics, owns The Beat) in September of 2017. In an update on January 3rd, artist Wendy Xu announced the webcomic would resume updating “several times a week” in February. She also had this to say about the print edition:

The book will have brand-new updated art for Chapters 1 and 2, illustrated chapter headers and a whole lot of fun back-matter that was exclusive to Patreon until now.

Check out the cover for the print collection, as well as the full press release from Lion Forge, below. The Mooncakes webcomic begins updating again on February 14th, and the collection will be in comic shops on October 2nd.

ST. LOUIS, MO—Following this past weekend’s American Library Association Midwinter conference in Seattle, WA, Lion Forge announces the publication date for Suzanne Walker and Wendy Xu’s Mooncakes, the queer Chinese-American fantasy romance coming to print for the first time in October of 2019. PASTE Magazine has already called the collection one of 2019’s most-anticipated releases!

“Mooncakes is a labor of love. We set out to tell a story of reunion—two childhood crushes who find each other again to find out whether their friendship could be something more,” said the co-creators of Mooncakes.“Nova and Tam’s love thrives in a rich, vibrant world of magic, demons, and elder witches, and their journey is a reflection of all we value as creators. We couldn’t be more thrilled that Lion Forge is releasing it in print, and we are so excited to share Nova and Tam’s story with the world!”

Nova Huang knows more about magic than your average teen witch. She works at her grandmothers’ bookshop, where she helps them loan out spell books and investigate any supernatural occurrences in their New England town.

One fateful night, she follows reports of a white wolf into the woods, and she comes across the unexpected: her childhood crush, Tam Lang, battling a horse demon in the woods. As a werewolf, Tam has been wandering from place to place for years, unable to call any town home.

Pursued by dark forces eager to claim the magic of wolves and out of options, Tam turns to Nova for help. Their latent feelings are rekindled against the backdrop of witchcraft, untested magic, occult rituals, and family ties both new and old in this enchanting tale of self-discovery.

Mooncakes began online in 2015 and has been updated on the first and fifteenth of each month since. Lion Forge first announced its publication in 2017, and today reveals both this much anticipated collection’s brand-new cover and publication date of October 2, 2019 in comic shops, and October 15 in bookstores. Mooncakeswill resume online on February 14, with pages uploaded weekly ahead of the print release this fall.
