In a Variety feature on Supergirl star Milly Alcock, it was confirmed the actress will reprise the title role in the Superman sequel Man of Tomorrow. DC Studios co-CEO and chairman Peter Safran comments, “She’s a major part of what we’re doing,” indicating Kara Zor-El/Supergirl’s appearance will be much bigger than her introduction at the end of 2025’s Superman.
Man of Tomorrow, which is currently filming for a July 9, 2027 release, will see David Corenswet‘s Superman and Nicholas Hoult‘s Lex Luthor team up against the alien cyborg villain Brainiac (Lars Eidinger). Rachel Brosnahan, Skyler Gisondo, Sara Sampaio, Isabela Merced, Edi Gathegi, Nathon Fillion, and María Gabriela de Faría are also set to return for the film, while new additions will include Adria Arjona as alien queen Maxima, and Aaron Pierre as Green Lantern John Stewart.
Supergirl and Brainiac have had a long history in the comics and media, with the pair having been originally intended to make their film debut together (along with Mister Mxyzptlk) in 1983’s Superman III, before the film’s story was taken into another direction for budgetary reasons.
Kara played a prominent role in the 2008 Action Comics story “Brainiac,” which reestablished the villain in a major way for post-Infinite Crisis continuity, and revealed her parents were among his prisoners in the miniaturized city of Kandor. Kara’s father Zor-El, whom David Krumholtz is playing in Supergirl, was also turned into Cyborg Superman by Brainiac in the New 52 comics.
In the meantime, Supergirl will arrive in theaters on June 26. For more from Alcock and DC Studios until then, including the story of how she landed the part, and how she’s handling the pressure of taking on the role, head to Variety. The animated Supergirl voiced by Kiana Madeira will also make her return on My Adventures with Superman season three, premiering on Adult Swim on Sunday, June 14.
