You know it’s event season at Marvel Comics when the tie-in announcements start rolling in. Yesterday the publisher announced Planet of the Symbiotes, a tie-in to the forthcoming The King in Black event storyline. Today Marvel has announced three additional tie-ins to The King in Black, featuring an eclectic group of fan-favorite characters.

First up, via comicbook.com, is The King in Black: Return of the Valkyries, a four-issue series that finds current Valkyrie Jane Foster teamed with a trio of other Valkyries against Knull’s symbiote army. The series is written by the Valkyrie: Jane Foster duo of Jason AaronTorunn Grønbekk, with art by Nina Vakueva and covers by Mattia De Iulis. The first two issues of the title will arrive in January – check out the covers and solicit text for both of them below.

King in Black Return of the Valkyries

KING IN BLACK: RETURN OF THE VALKYRIES #1 (OF 4)

  • JANE FOSTER RETURNS!
  • Once there was an entire army of Valkyries, but now Jane Foster is the only one. When the King in Black comes to Midgard, Jane must rebuild the Valkyries to help stop him — starting with Hildegarde, a warrior from Asgard’s own hallowed halls, and X-Man Dani Moonstar, a former Valkyrie herself. But what Jane doesn’t know…is that she never was the only Valkyrie after all. Who is the fourth warrior? Jason Aaron and Torunn Grønbekk team up with artist Nina Vakueva for a story that will rock the foundations of the Marvel Universe!

King in Black Return of the Valkyries

KING IN BLACK: RETURN OF THE VALKYRIES #2 (OF 4)

  • SAVE THE SENTRY – SAVE THE VALKYRIES – SAVE THE EARTH!

  • Knull and his symbiote horrors have come to Earth, and now all Jane Foster sees when she looks at that big blue globe…is a vision of death. Most of Earth’s heroes are locked in battle on the ground, and it’s up to Jane and the Sentry to protect the rest! But Knull’s power has spread over the galaxy and infected creatures even older than the gods…and it may not matter how many Valkyries Jane can bring to their aid.

Jane Foster: Valkyrie was one of the best things to come out of last year’s War of the Realms event, sadly cut down just as it was hitting its stride following the COVID-19 shutdown. Even if it’s just for four issues, I’m glad to to see it back.

Next up is The King in Black: Black Knight, a story that will reintroduce Dane Whitman as a hero in the battle against Knull. Given Knull’s ancient history and Whitman’s own Arthurian lineage, could there be a connection between the two? The one-shot issue is written by Si Spurrier, with painted art by Jesus Saiz and a cover by Dan Mora. You can see the cover below, and see some interior art by Saiz over on marvel.com.

King in Black Knight

KING IN BLACK: BLACK KNIGHT #1

As the endless horde of symbiote dragons darken the skies of Shanghai, Black Knight will have to overcome the growing evil within himself while grappling with surprising discoveries about his past. This epic issue will introduce new readers to the fan-favorite hero and reveal the bright future he has in the Marvel Universe, all amidst a vigorous battle that will go down in Marvel history!

And finally, another hero whose title was cut down by COVID returns in The King in Black: Gwenom vs. Carnage. Ghost-Spider, the Gwen Stacy of Earth-65, wears a symbiote suit on a regular basis, and this miniseries finds her apparently succumbing to its power to become Gwenom once again — just in time to battle Carnage. The series is written be previous Ghost-Spider scribe Seanan McGuire, with art by Flaviano and covers by Ken Lashley.

King in Black Gwenom Carnage

KING IN BLACK: GWENOM VS. CARNAGE #1

Equipped with a symbiotic suit of her own, the god of symbiote’s descent on the Marvel Universe in King in Black will throw Gwenom’s world into chaos. As Knull unleashes his dark influence throughout the globe, Gwen will have to defend her new home universe against one of the most dangerous symbiotes of all time — Carnage!

There’s sure to be plenty more King in Black tie-ins to come from Marvel. Look for these three books to arrive in stores in January 2021.
