Event season rolled on in November, as INFINITY reached its climax, while the Ultimate imprint’s CATACLYSM got under way. Meanwhile, ASTONISHING X-MEN was relaunched as AMAZING X-MEN, and the MARVEL KNIGHTS X-MEN and LONGSHOT SAVES THE MARVEL UNIVERSE minis kick off.
Though DC had four books in the top five – BATMAN, HARLEY QUINN, SUPERMAN UNCHAINED and FOREVER EVIL – Marvel still edged them in their share of the North American direct market, leading by 34% to 32% in unit terms, and 30% to 29% in dollars. As has already been pointed out on The Beat, this means Marvel and DC’s combined dollar share dips below 60% – something that hasn’t happened in a decade.
Thanks as always to ICV2.com for their permission to use these figures.

While this isn’t officially a relaunch, the fact is that AMAZING X-MEN replaces the flagging ASTONISHING X-MEN on the schedule. A higher profile creative team and a shiny new adjective (or at least, one that hasn’t been used since the Age of Apocalypse crossover back in the 90s) duly boosts sales.
By normal Marvel standards, 112K is a very good number, even with multiple variant covers attached. But the last time Marvel relaunched an X-Men title was in May, when X-MEN was somewhat arbitrarily renumbered. That relaunch had estimated first month sales of 178K, and plainly this one is quite some distance behind.
6. INFINITY 08/13 Infinity #1 of 6 - 205,819 09/13 Infinity #2 of 6 - 125,985 (-38.8%) 09/13 Infinity #3 of 6 - 123,285 ( -2.1%) 10/13 Infinity #4 of 6 - 113,003 ( -8.3%) 10/13 Infinity #5 of 6 - 106,567 ( -5.7%) 11/13 Infinity #6 of 6 - 100,292 ( -5.9%)
The whole series places above the 100K mark, which I imagine Marvel will be happy enough with. It’s a modest improvement compared with AGE OF ULTRON’s first six issues. It’s nowhere close to AVENGERS VS X-MEN (which was over 185K six issues in), but still eminently respectable.

Two issues this month. The “Battle of the Atom” crossover is over, but the Decade Variant covers on issue #18 are apparently enough of a draw to delay the sales drop to issue #19. After that, though, we’re back to business as usual.

Issue #21 didn’t have a variant cover, hence the dip for that issue. And even without the bells and whistles, that issue still sells significantly ahead of the closing issues of AMAZING SPIDER-MAN, showing that this direction has delivered a sustained sales boost that lasted the year.
15. This is an INFINITY tie-in, not that it’s obvious from the numbers above. AVENGERS doesn’t seem to have had much benefit from the crossover, but then most people who are interested in getting the full INFINITY story were probably buying this title already.

18. SUPERIOR SPIDER-MAN ANNUAL 11/13 Annual #1 - 63,595
Only around 10K behind the non-variant issues of the ongoing series, which is pretty good. The solicitation stressed that the story has some wider significance, and that may have helped.
19. UNCANNY AVENGERS 11/12 Uncanny Avengers #2 - 114,257 (-62.4%) 12/12 --- 01/13 Uncanny Avengers #3 - 92,165 (-19.3%) 02/13 Uncanny Avengers #4 - 87,539 ( -5.0%) 03/13 Uncanny Avengers #5 - 84,382 ( -3.6%) 04/13 Uncanny Avengers #6 - 80,863 ( -4.2%) 04/13 Uncanny Avengers #7 - 77,027 ( -4.7%) 05/13 Uncanny Avengers #8 - 75,655 ( -1.8%) 05/13 Uncanny Av. #8AU - 72,514 ( -4.2%) 06/13 Uncanny Avengers #9 - 71,842 ( -0.9%) 07/13 Uncanny Avengers #10 - 68,768 ( -4.3%) 08/13 Uncanny Avengers #11 - 65,447 ( -4.8%) 09/13 Uncanny Avengers #12 - 73,357 (+12.1%) 10/13 Uncanny Avengers #13 - 60,597 (-17.4%) 11/13 Uncanny Avengers #14 - 60,750 ( +0.3%) 6 mnth (-19.7%) 1 year (-46.8%)
There’s a variant cover on this issue, which probably explains the marginal uptick. The general trend continues to drift down.

A very gentle downward trend, but the relaunched DEADPOOL title remains way up from the last two years of the previous volume.
33. DEADPOOL ANNUAL 11/13 Annual #1 - 43,922
Almost matching the sales of the parent title. Again, it may have helped that the solicitation promised a story with some significance to the character (even if it was just an explanation of what happened to the other voices in his head).
34. MIGHTY AVENGERS 09/13 Mighty Avengers v2 #1 - 101,921 10/13 Mighty Avengers v2 #2 - 54,862 (-46.2%) 11/13 Mighty Avengers v2 #3 - 42,210 (-23.1%)
Not holding up brilliantly so far, but then they have been dialling back on the number of variant covers with each issue. This is an INFINITY tie-in, but then the next two issues are INHUMANITY tie-ins, which ought to cushion the fall. Still, it could be a while before we get a sense of where this title is going to wind up.
35. CATACLYSM 07/13 Hunger #1 of 4 - 70,835 08/13 Hunger #2 of 4 - 44,929 (-36.6%) 09/13 --- 10/13 Hunger #3 of 4 - 39,915 (-11.2%) 10/13 Hunger #4 of 4 - 36,775 ( -7.9%) 10/13 Cataclysm #0.1 - 37,589 ( +2.2%) 11/13 Cataclysm #1 of 5 - 42,109 (+12.0%)
As we’ll see later, CATACLYSM does seem to have boosted sales on the individual Ultimate books. Nonetheless, it’s plainly a bad sign when the first issue of CATACLYSM can’t even match the second issue of HUNGER, a mini which was supposed to be building interest for this event. When the threatened extinction of the Ultimate Universe can’t even make the top 30, it does suggest that (with the arguable exception of the Spider-Man book) it’s past time for Marvel to cut their losses on this line.
39. THOR: GOD OF THUNDER 11/03 Thor v2 #71 - 31,706 11/08 --- 11/09 Thor Finale - 53,566 11/10 Thor #617 - 49,165 11/11 Thor v4 #8 - 40,703 ===== 11/12 Thor v5 #1 - 110,443 (+212.6%) 11/12 Thor v5 #2 - 65,533 ( -40.7%) 12/12 Thor v5 #3 - 55,547 ( -15.2%) 01/13 Thor v5 #4 - 50,478 ( -9.1%) 02/13 Thor v5 #5 - 51,861 ( +2.7%) 03/13 Thor v5 #6 - 50,481 ( -2.7%) 04/13 Thor v5 #7 - 51,526 ( +2.1%) 05/13 Thor v5 #8 - 48,622 ( -5.6%) 06/13 Thor v5 #9 - 49,125 ( +1.0%) 07/13 Thor v5 #10 - 46,204 ( -5.9%) 08/13 Thor v5 #11 - 45,397 ( -1.7%) 08/13 Thor v5 #12 - 44,865 ( -1.2%) 09/13 Thor v5 #13 - 48,007 ( +7.0%) 10/13 Thor v5 #14 - 46,008 ( -4.2%) 11/13 Thor v5 #15 - 41,259 ( -10.3%) 6 mnth ( -15.1%) 1 year ( -37.0%) 2 year ( +1.4%) 3 year ( -16.1%) 4 year ( -23.0%) 5 year ( --- ) 10 year ( +30.1%)
The previous two issues had variant covers, so the general trend remains a more typical downward drift.

Holding up pretty well. Having bottomed out at 33K at the tail end of 2012, HAWKEYE has rebounded to the 40K range and seems to be staying there. Books that do this without any hype beyond good word of mouth are incredibly rare, so it’s clearly doing something right.

Steady downward drift. The book starts an INHUMANITY tie-in arc in December.
51. WOLVERINE & THE X-MEN ANNUAL 11/13 Annual #1 - 36,804
The X-books’ token INFINITY tie-in. Once again, this annual comes in quite close to the regular title. Marvel should be pleased with the annual sales this month.

There are two variant covers on this issue, as there were on issue #17. Overall, the book still seems to be floating in the mid-30Ks.

This issue was billed as a 100th issue anniversary, with multiple variant covers. Even allowing for the fact that the October issue was an INFINITY tie-in, I suspect Marvel were hoping for a bit more movement than this.
67. SUPERIOR CARNAGE 07/13 Superior Carnage #1 of 5 - 48,053 08/13 Superior Carnage #2 of 5 - 40,864 (-15.0%) 09/13 Superior Carnage #3 of 5 - 36,022 (-11.8%) 10/13 Superior Carnage #4 of 5 - 33,159 ( -7.9%) 11/13 Superior Carnage #5 of 5 - 31,100 ( -6.2%)
It’s shed readers over its run, but 31K is still a more than respectable level for a mini to wrap up at. The strategy of launching this book as part of a Spider-Man month seems to have worked.
70,73. Two issues this month – the final part of Jock’s story, and the first part of Phil Jimenez’s. There’s a variant cover on issue #12, which doesn’t seem to have done much to arrest the book’s arterial bleeding.
72. MARVEL KNIGHTS: X-MEN 11/13 X-Men #1 of 5 - 30,214
Not too bad; it’s better than ASTONISHING was managing.
And from here, we start to hit the books that are scheduled for relaunches…
76. Relaunching after issue #17, when the two X-Force titles appear to be merging after a two month crossover. As matters stand, the two books are entirely unconnected – in fact, UNCANNY X-FORCE doesn’t even star a team of that name.

A significant increase for the CATACLYSM arc – but then the book was starting from a low level. Again, no issue was solicited for March.

I still can’t figure out why Marvel was publishing two different X-Force titles.
@ Paul or Heidi or whoever can edit this article – Amazing isn’t replacing Astonishing. It’s clearly replacing the soon to be defunct Wolverine & The X-Men. Same writer, same setting, mostly the same cast and picks up threads that Wolverine and the X-Men has been seeding.
Wolverine & the X-Men is relaunching.
Those Powers numbers are pure sadness. I’m one of the many who’s stopped reading the series ongoing, but once upon a time it was one of the best books going.

How can you read something that never comes out on a timely basis?
I continue to buy Powers in tpb, and they’ve been averaging a new one (collecting 5-6 issues) every 15+ months for the past few years. I always have to go back and read the one before, to remember what happened, its been so long between books.
Its obvious that Bendis doesn’t have the time or desire to do it anymore, in favor of his other work. I wish he would just write one final storyline to end it and be done w/it…

^You think that’s bad, but on the frontpage of CBR there’s a blurb saying that X-Men Legacy #24 will be “the series’ final issue before it relaunches as ‘Nightcrawler’ in April!”
Hie-yie-yie…
Forget Powers, the numbers on Captain America, Iron Man, the Fantastic Four, and FF are pretty horrible. A little over a year after their NOW relaunches, and they’re below the pre-relaunch levels? That’s not good at all.
damn shame about superior foes numbers, that is one great book (and it’s only 2.99$). for those people out there that miss secret six, grab the trade

I was trying to find that book when I went in to pick up MiracleMan . I heard good things about this series and love the idea. Also liked what I saw in the digital peeks., For my money, Spider-man has the best rogues gallery of villlains . (Batman’s are great too but no goofy 2nd stringers and colorful ones like Spiderman has . Especially since DC has now grinded their personalities essential the same Joker, mad plotter character)
But to figure out where find it in the store was like playing a game of Where’s Waldo . Marvel just peppers the Spiderman rack with all these books called Superior with similar web-graffiti graphics. You can’t tell them apart, much like that X-Book & Avengers situation.

If it’s not a mistake soon to be $4 according to solicits which I guess will be the final nail in the coffin for my favorite title.

They did the same to Fearless Defenders. Look how well that turned out.
My guess is eventually everything will be numbered like magazines, and nothing will have more than 12 issues. It’ll just start over with No.1-12; Vol 16, No.1-12; Vol.17, etc. It’ll all be 6 or 12 issue story arcs, with short crossovers mixed into the arcs.
The Marvel Universe today is basically Avengers, Spider-man ,and of course Wolverine.
Why numbers at all? Just do like most magazines do, and put the date on the cover instead? Replace the “#1” with “January 2014”. The only people who’d be upset with this are speculators who gobble anything up as long as it has a “#1” splashed on the cover.
The trouble is that they’d revert to the earlier numbering for “anniversary” issues of even the most spurious kind.
I wouldn’t say Bendis doesn’t care about Powers over his other Marvel work, but I would say he and Oeming certainly give the impression that until FX either gets a show on the air, or flat out says “It’s not happening” he doesn’t have as much a desire to keep the book going since he has no reason to promote the book anymore.
It’s sad to see a lot of these numbers for books that used to sell a lot more. Maybe Kirkman was right and Marvel is poorly run at the top. I think if they concentrated less on “hipster-izing” their books, they’d appeal to more readers. There seems to be no true interest from new readers and a lot of older readers are being alienated by many of their decisions.
It’s a shame about Avengers A.I. It isn’t that good anyway, but I was hoping Marvel would get the idea that Vision is still a well-liked character. They’ll probably blame it on Vision rather than the fact that the story is boring.
Wow — Fantastic Four slipped below 30K? I wouldn’t have guessed that Marvel’s “flagship” title would be bottoming out like that. I guess if you don’t have movies in the pipeline, that explains everything.
Avengers A.I. sounded great! – until I saw the artwork. I passed. Ugh. Marvel’s artist selections just get worse and worse with every new title (IMHO.)

But speculators are the EXACT reason why Marvel keeps chugging out #1s. They’re the ones going for the illusive first issue every time.
“Uncanny Avengers #14 – 60,750 ( +0.3%)
There’s a variant cover on this issue, which probably explains the marginal uptick. The general trend continues to drift down.”
That, and Rogue, Wonder Man and Scarlet Witch all died.
“That, and Rogue, Wonder Man and Scarlet Witch all died.”
That would only affect reorders. No one knew about those deaths in advance, so no one ordered more copies of the issue in advance.
Looks like there is an issue with your sentences just after half way. They vanish!
And you might want to add this to your comment regarding Daredevil.
Relaunching after issue #36, with a new location. – And an increase in price for no other reason than to gouge the customer.
And with Young Avengers ending I now collect no Marvel titles. I already cancelled X-Factor with the same relaunch/price increase that Daredevil is getting.
