Welcome to a new analysis of the Marvel sales. Reminder: I’m French, that’s why I’m talking funny. Please adress your complaints to my “Gentleman Trump said our first lady is in good shape” country. For any information about the French magazine on US comics I’m editing, please send me a message using my e-mail address from any of my own commentaries
Oh boy, do you also hear all those voices complaining about Marvel? Beetween the angry fanboys, complaining about those women and minority characters usurpating “their” hero’s names, and people fed up with Marvel’s repetitive use of commercial trends ,promising once again the creation of a black hole, it seems that nobody is pleased anymore by what Marvel is currently offering. And the announcement of the release of expensive team-up Legacy books with special lenticular covers kept on feeding this raging fire.
This month saw a special variant theme: Mary Jane! And, apparently, putting her on a variant cover has retailers (and let’s hope, customers) getting almost crazy. When you have an extra 5K only because of this variant program, and when your sales are mostly in the 20-30K zone, that’s like +20% of sales only because of a gimmick. Marvel Variant Comics is more and more a reality! That’s our legacy from the 90’s! Now, I understand where Marvel is going with their “new” initiative.
Reminder: these sales are estimates, sales to comics shops located in North America. American comics do get sold other places in their original floppy edition. But keep in mind, just because a copy is sold to a shop doens’t mean it’s sold to a customer. This would be way too easy. Digital sales are not taken into account.
Many thanks to Milton Griepp and ICv2.com for the permission to use their figures. Also thanks to the Comics Zone shop in Lyon (my city in France!) for its help.
MARVEL COMICS DIGEST #1 AMAZING SPIDER-MAN ($7) : 7,164 The first Archie Comics digest with Marvel reprints is here and its sales are quite good. Surpringly, it doesn't appear in the TPB charts, but the floppy chart. It would have been #1 in the TPB top300 chart! And only $7! That's the price of Marvel reprint of the Vision (only 2 episodes + bonuses).
5- PETER PARKER SPECTACULAR SPIDER-MAN ($5) 06/17 PP Spectacular Spider-Man #1 - 224,620
At $5 a copy, that’s $1 million money made with this issue. The real test will be in 3-4 months but you have to give Marvel a break: with Chip Zdarsky and Adam Kubert at the core of the series, you know you’re gonna have something new and fresh.

The minute Marvel said it would wrapped up Darth Vader, I knew it would be back (and wrote it). This is the most successfull Star Wars comics! Those debut numbers are disapointing -on Darth Vader levels- but I guess we do not have to worry. As always, every TPB volume of the previous series is selling 500 copies (1K for the first volume). Nobody is selling that much at Marvel, except Deadpool.

7- EDGE OF VENOMVERSE 06/17 Edge of Venomverse #1 - 98,052
What did I say last month? Here is the first of the Venom invasion of titles. Each issue of this title will feature a new venomized version of a character, joining the Venomverse. A comic book series based on a gimmick? Well, it could work, but please, Marvel, don’t come crying later when the market will really collapse

If this seems like a record low for one of Marvel major events, keep in mind it double shipped and it kept almost steady since issue#2.

Part 4 of Screaming Citadel. Perfect behavior, with the first TPB still gaining readers, as always. But you can see the difference with Darth Vader with the second tpb not yet cracking 12 K when Darth Vader is already above 20K

13/35- DEFENDERS ($5) 06/17 Defenders #1 - 64,253 06/17 Defenders #2 - 46,158 (-28.2%)
Well, they could have named it Fantastic Four, seing that Jessica and Cage are an item with child (Sue+Red), that Luke was part of the FF and that Luke and Iron Fist are like brothers and always bickering (Torch+Thing). You missed an opportunity, Marvel!

It was so annoying to have Peter Parker and Doc Ock’s psyches fighting each other, so a good old physical fight beetween Dock Ock (now slim and in a scary Hydra costume) and Spider-Man is indeed appealing, especially if drawn by Stuart Immonen.

Standard anniversary issue with tons of variants. The first two tpb continue to sell. The fact that the gasp beetween them is not very deep is a very good sign for the series: that means that people getting the first tpb want to buy the second one after reading it.

I’m daring you to say you recognized Mary Jane on its variant cover. Speaking of covers, I’m really surprised Marvel is still using the covers Ardian Syaf did. Interior art couln’t have been changed in time, but the covers could have been.

25- WEAPONS OF MUTANT DESTRUCTION ($5) 06/17 Weapons of Mutant Destruction #1 - 52,800
Surprinsingly, it sells way above the Weapon X ongoing. That’s probably because of the poetry of the title. Part 2 is in TA Hulk.

Usually, Annuals tend to sell at around the same level than their ongoing. Something here didn’t work, especially since the Annual was the Secret Empire tie-in! So far, this relaunch with a new creative team seem to be doing very well, better than the last volume. But beware, because those issues were overshipping, a lot (issue#4 was $ ranked #102!)

There is a Mike Allred variant with Mary Jane as the Vision in its first appearance. This explain the out-of-this-world burst. There is no evidence of overshipping, which is surprising. Probably a special deal help explain such a jump. The content of the comic? Who cares?!

279- VISION DIRECTOR'S CUT ($7) 06/17 Vision DC #1 of 6 - 5,740
This successful series written by Tom King (12 issues) is returning in a new format. Each issue features two issues with extras. Price is $7 per issue. A nice move and experiment by Marvel, with quite decent sales so far. Seeing that the original series sold around 20K and is not very old, that’s quite a nice result. It makes sense to repackage it so soon, as it was one of the only Marvel titles which saw a rise in its sales. Let’s hope it will be followed by other titles!

Thanks for reading until the end! I hope to see you next time. Meanwhile, feel free to comment, express your rage or your love for French sarcasm! I’ll hug everyone, no matter what.
Xavier Lancel, born 1973 in France, living in the beautiful city of Lyon, has been working since 1999 for Scarce, one of the longest running fanzines on US comics (32 years old!). He has been editor of the magazine since 2008. He also runs two blogs, one devoted to Ernie Colon (http://erniecolonunlimited.
“Royalty doesn’t sell. Just ask Guillotine.”
[slow clap]
Is there a better avatar for what’s wrong with Marvel than Hawkeye? Three new #1’s in 21 months and a sex swap in the lead character.
Both X-Men #5 and I Am Groot #2 also have Mary Jane variants. =P
The X-MEN titles appear to be on a trajectory toward another relaunch by issue 18, which seems to be the new normal for mutant titles. I wonder how many readers have jumped off the current titles waiting for the next iteration?
LL
@Luis Lane, I used the current resurextion to jump off and have no plans to jump back on when the next reboot/renumber/re-market occurs. If i want mutants ill read Harbingers Renegades.
Ive already put up with mediocre story lines since the original marvel now and just sick of it.
geez, those numbers. do we even want to know how many were actually sold?
@Xavier:
Shadowcat and Iceman were an item for a brief time during Aaron’s “Wolverine and the X-Men” run.
So far as ResurrXion goes, at this point, the overall direction of the X-Men franchise is so uninteresting that the knowledge that it’ll relaunch in 18 months or so is all that keeps me paying attention. The only book I’m interested in enough to buy right now is Iceman, but I can always hope that the next roster/creator shake-up turns up something more interesting.
Now that the Wasp book is over, I want to actually sing it’s praises. It was funny, well-drawn and the new character is interesting and (surprisingly to me) didn’t feel shoe-horned in to continuity.
It definitely was *wordy*, but I never felt that I didn’t get $4 worth of entertainment out of each issue — which is a rarity in Marvel comics these days.
But, yeah, those sales sucked, didn’t they? Lower than “Occupy Avengers”? Sheesh.
And, yeah, “America” is not long for this world. I cancelled my preorders after reading #1, so I was stuck with 2 and 3 (as I don’t like to shaft my LCS with things I pre-order) and regretted reading each subsequent issue.
These are terrible, awful, no good numbers. I don’t think anyone can blame this on “diversity.” It’s pretty clear no one wants to read Marvel comics outside of a handful of very dedicated souls. I’m not saying DC is any better, as I have no horse in that race, but these are horrific sales.
Kinda glad to see Secret Empire’s sales fall apart. Marvel was way too smug about that one.
Of course, Ramon Perez is not releasing a Mary Jane graphic novel but a Jane [Austen] book] – that wasn’t a typo :p
Marvel is just doggedly sticking to their All -New, Marvel Now, publishing plan. I see no evidence from Generations, and what is to follow, that they listened to the lapsed, disgruntled, fans that actually buy (used to buy) and read (used to read) their books. It’s all smoke and mirrors. I am sure there will be an initial short lived sales boost following Generations. Then next year’s marketing campaign will be the Superior All New – Super Rad Marvel initiative. Marvel used to publish comics worth reading, about characters people cared about. Present day Marvel is nothing more than an IP company.
Me and LCS owner soo tired. Good times digging old issues tho.
I’m down to just two Marvel titles and no titles from other publishers, it’s hard to believe I’m not getting more than that. I have a lot of resistance to paying $3.99 for a regular comic book, and there are almost no titles that are getting over that barrier for me now. There are a few I’ll get in Trade Paperback, like the Adams Deadman series (although I wish someone else was writing it). I do get several collections of older material each month though, that appeal to me a lot more than the current comics. It’s pretty sad how low Marvel sales are getting, I wonder how long it will be before they do a major course correction. So far the Legacy initiative looks almost identical to the pre-Legacy titles.
The layout at the of the ‘article’ is a bit weird, but your first paragraph pretty much sums it all up. Thank you Xavier.
I would have tried Generation X had it featured more than just Jubilee from the original team (and had a better creative team). Its X-Men Academy (or whatever it used to be called).
I really wish the over ships were listed separately. I would love to know how many issues a month Marvel are just giving away for free because no one wants their books
I’ll be interested to see Marvel’s reaction to DC’s planned format changes (more kids’ books and the forthcoming oversized Snyder books). Hopefully Marvel will abandon self-covers soon but I’m not holding my breath as they seem to be focusing on cost cutting measures (e.g., cheaper foreign artists). If there were a way to print even lower-quality books I’m sure they’d leap at it.

Calling a lot of old school readers “disgruntled fanboys” probably isn’t the best tactic.
Marvel is driving GOTG into the ground. Issue 6 was lower on the July 2017 charts than SPIDER-MAN RENEW YOUR VOWS. Marvel needs to implement new leadership quickly — before they drive any more retailers out of business.
