Marvel Month-to-Month Sales Charts October 2016: N.O.W. (NOT OPTIMISTIC WHATSOEVER) MONTH

Welcome to a new analysis of the Marvel sales. Reminder: I’m French, that’s why I’m talking funny. Please address your complaints to my “sorry, no foie gras for Christmas” country.

If last month was very quiet for Marvel, this one is literally bursting with new titles, events and…falls! A lot of Marvel titles are taking a beating, be there on the top list or not, and most of the new launches are very weak, if not close to disaster. Giving their ongoing titles to Solo, Slapstick and Foolkiller, when, putted together, they can’t even sell decently a Deadpool derived title, that was quite optimistic!
Launching 6 new ongoing titles at the same time, when most of them never ever supported one before, was pretty risky. Some of them could take the exit door before even their weakest counterpart from the first wave of Marvel Now will stop.

And there are still quite a lot of others ongoing, based on secondary or their characters waiting in the corner (The Wasp, Foolkiller, Gamora), not counting the thrice or more relaunched Rocket Raccoon, Star Lord or Nova.

To make it short: this was not a good month for Marvel’s Now! line of titles.

Reminder: those sales are estimates, sales to comics shops situated in North America. American comics do get sold somewhere else in their original floppy edition. Keep also in mind that it’s not because a copy is sold to a shop that it’s sold to a customer. This would be way too easy. Digital sales are not taken into account.

2-CHAMPIONS ($5)

10/16  Champions  #1  -    328,165   

The hard-won Champions trademark was waiting to be used again after an X-Force-Champions Annual in the late 90’s. Remember that Marvel fought over it in the 80’s -there was a super-hero role playing game of the same name. The sollicitation text doesn’t tell if it is still a west coast Los Angeles based team, like its first iteration was. Obviously, Loot Crate numbers -or the equivalent- are included in those numbers. We will have to wait next month to have a glimpse of the real audience of this title.

3-DR STRANGE SORCERERS SUPREME

That’s almost the same debut numbers than Dr Strange’s. That’s impressive. This one should quickly be at least a little below its “parent” title. Still, that’s the proof that the Dr. Strange is one of the new hottest properties at Marvel. The higher ups are probably already thinking of adding a third title to his family of titles.

Brian Bendis and Michael Gaydos are reunited. It’s nice to see Michael Gaydos back on a high profile book, after a stunt on Archie’s Black Hood first arc. Even if the title loose half of its buyer next month, that will make a quite decent base of readers to work upon.But tons of variants here, so beware!

For anyone who would dare pretend International hasn’t been cancelled: you can still see on Amazon that the International Vol.2 HC, who was supposed to be released on April 25th 2017 has been cancelled. International was first supposed to go on longer than only 7 issues, of course. The rebrand and the change of person under the helmet doesn’t seem to have changed a thing. The title is ready to follow the same surprisingly disappointing -considering its top creative team- sales than its predecessor.

A weak debut for what seems like another Marvel comical comics (how many of those can the market support?). Moey for those ones is often in the TPB format so we’ll have to wait to see if it will indeed attract part of this new audience. Meanwhile, we can marvel at Hercules’ hairy legs on one of the variant covers.

Start of a new arc, supported by one variant. If the first TPB sold OK on its first month, it hasn’t make any come back in the TPB top 300 so far. Not a good sign for the title, but Marvel is perhaps looking at it from a “Marvel adventures kid line” angle. And from it, it’s still two times better than what this kind of title was performing before Marvel included them in its MU line.
