Artist Jim Lee and writer Brad Meltzer are teaming up on an 8-page story about Batman and real-life war hero Salvatore Giunta, who was the last recipient of the Medal of Honor for actions taken in Afghanistan.
Jim Lee announced the story himself Thursday at New York Comic Con during DC’s Meet the Publisher Panel. It will be included in one of DC’s forthcoming 100-page giants, this one a war comic that pays homage to the publisher’s past in that genre. There was no art revealed from the book, and they didn’t confirm a specific release date. If one had to guess, however, it seems likely the book is this one, which is due out on Nov. 11.
The story, Lee said, will start off and seemingly be about Batman and his fictional war on crime, before seguing into being about Giunta’s real life. Lee said he was expecting something gritty, and Meltzer “delivered something different” and that it is “a really interesting way of telling the story of [Giunta’s] life.”
Giunta was awarded the Medal of Honor in November 2010. You can read more about it in the link in that last sentence, but Giunta essentially saved many of his fellow troops who were under fire after being ambushed in Afghanistan.
