Jeff Lemire and Dustin Nguyen received critical acclaim for their science-fiction Descender series from Image Comics, with the latter winning the Eisner Award for “Best Painter/Multimedia Artist.” Right now the superstar writer and artist duo are working together on the Robin & Batman 3-issue miniseries from DC Comics, but it won’t be their last project together. In the latest public installment of his newsletter Lemire revealed details on Little Monsters, his brand new series with Nguyen as well as letter Steve Wands, coming from Image Comics this March.

Pitched as “Lord Of The Flies meets child vampires,” Little Monsters follows a group of vampire children living in an abandoned decaying husk of Los Angeles. The series is a stark departure from Descender, not only in terms of genre but also in Nguyen’s new art style which you can see in the preview pages below.

Little Monsters comicLittle Monsters comicIf you couldn’t already tell, the Little Monsters comic isn’t at all related to the 1989 Howie Mandel and Fred Savage film of the same name or the 2019 Lupita Nyong’o zombie comedy either. In his newsletter, Lemire described the series as being “much more grounded and character-driven” and a “blend of horror, fantasy, science fiction that creates a character study of these kids and what it would mean to be locked in eternal childhood.”

Between this and the previously announced Fishflies graphic novel and The Bone Orchard Mythos, Lemire has probably never been busier in his entire comics career.

In addition to the main cover drawn by Nguyen, Lemire revealed the first issue of the Little Monsters comic will feature a variant cover by him as well as another by Doug Mahnke.

More info from Lemire & Nguyen on their new collaboration can be found in the writer’s latest newsletter. Look for the first issue of Little Monsters to arrive in stores this March.
