Walking Dead, Star Wars and My Little Pony are joined by JMS’ Ten Grand and the new Regular Show title near the top of the charts this month. Elsewhere there are a lot of new comics, and a few new publishers to the chart, debuting to largely impressive sales.

147 indie books charted this month, down on last month’s 152. The bottom book sold 4,962, up on last month’s 4,369. They sold approximately 1,718,555 in total, a little down on last month’s 1,767,473. Average sales are 11,690 per book, Slightly up on last month’s 11,628. UK and European sales from Diamond UK are not reported in this chart.

Out of the 147 books, 39 went up in sales and 84 went down, with the rest made up of one-shots and debuts.

Image are once again the top indie company, with an 8.11% dollar share and a 7.48% market share, while IDW have a 4.77% dollar share and 6.28% market share, Dark Horse have a 4.36% dollar share and a 4.73% market share, Dynamite have a 3.30% dollar share and 3.50% market share and Boom! have a 2.63% dollar share and 2.97% market share.

Thanks to icv2.com and Milton Griepp for permission to use these numbers, which are estimates, and can be found here.

Here’s this month’s top twenty indie graphic novels.

Adventure Time rules the indie charts this month, with the first original GN released (written by Danielle Corsetto, creator of the awesome webcomic Girls with Slingshots) and topping the chart by some way. It’s also a good month for Image, half the chart is theirs, and only five of them Walking Dead, the cheap first collections of Saga, Bedlam and Great Pacific alongside the second Thief of Thieves and Peter Panzerfaust collections. IDW’s sales on the first My Little Pony trade seem a little low, but it will no doubt be a perennial (as long as IDW can keep it in print!), although they cannily release a fast collection of the sleeper hit Prisoners of Time. Dark Horse also get two entries, new Buffy & Darth Maul collections, while the chart is rounded off by the third color Scott Pilgrim and a couple of manga titles.

300. Colonized (IDW)

04/2013: Colonized #1 - 8,521
05/2013: Colonized #2 - 4,962 (-41.8%)

Ouch, we begin with a big drop, but at least it means we can head the column with a nice Dave Sim cover!

299. True Blood (IDW)

05/2012: True Blood Ongoing #1 - 10,615

====

06/2012: True Blood Ongoing #2 - 8,943 (-15.8%)

09/2012: True Blood Ongoing #5 - 7,480 (-5.7%)
10/2012: True Blood Ongoing #6 - 7,232 (-3.3%)
11/2012: True Blood Ongoing #7 - 6,849 (-5.3%)

298. Dungeons and Dragons Cutter (IDW)

05/2012: Dungeons & Dragons Forgotten Realms #1 - 9,005

====

06/2012: Dungeons & Dragons Forgotten Realms #2 - 7,225 (-19.8%)

08/2012: Dungeons & Dragons Forgotten Realms #3 - ???? (???)

04/2013: Dungeons & Dragons Cutter #1 - 5,986 (+13.6%)
05/2013: Dungeons & Dragons Cutter #2 - 4,974 (-16.9%)

Two IDW licenses that appear to be approaching the end of their current incarnations, judging by these sales. True Blood has dropped almost a thousand copies in the last 2 issues.

297. Last of Us (Dark Horse)

04/2013: Last Of Us American Dreams #1 - 6,032
05/2013: Last Of Us American Dreams #2 - 4,991 (-17.3%)

As I predicted last month, this has been very under-ordered, the first issue is already going for up to $50 on certain online auction sites. It’s been slightly weirdly scheduled though, the trade won’t be out till October, by which time the buzz around the game will likely have died down a bit. I would suggest that they’d gain a fairly substantial amount of sales were they to bring it forward and release it the week after the fourth issue.

296. East of West (Image)

03/2013: East of West #1 - 49,518 (64,284)
04/2013: East of West #2 - 41,838 (-15.5%)

A third printing of issue one charts, with sales of 5,024.

295. Mars Attacks (IDW)

06/2012: Mars Attacks #1 - 43,514
07/2012: Mars Attacks #2 - 10,744 (-75.3%)

11/2012: Mars Attacks #5 - 7,321 (-10.6%)
12/2012: Mars Attacks Popeye - 7,748
12/2012: Mars Attacks #6 - 6,509 (-10.5%)
01/2013: Mars Attacks Transformers - 9,805
01/2013: Mars Attacks Kiss - 8,946
01/2013: Mars Attacks Real Ghostbusters - 8,695
01/2013: Mars Attacks Zombies vs Robots - 7,024
02/2013: Mars Attacks #7 - 5,943 (-8.7%)
03/2013: Mars Attacks #8 - 5,727 (-3.6%)
04/2013: Mars Attacks #9 - 5,481 (-4.3%)
05/2013: Mars Attacks #10 - 5,048 (-7.9%)

Another IDW license that seems to be running out of steam.

293. John Carpenter's Asylum (Storm King)

05/2013: John Carpenters Asylum #1 - 5,081

A new imprint, and the first book that John Carpenter has lent his name to. Pretty high powered creative team too, Bruce Jones and Leonardo Manco amongst them. I guess this is an okay figure for a new indie company.

291. Fashion Beast (Avatar)

09/2012: Fashion Beast #1 - 12,831
10/2012: Fashion Beast #2 - 9,460 (-26.3%)
10/2012: Fashion Beast #3 - 7,569 (-20.0%)

04/2013: Fashion Beast #8 - 5,327 (-2.0%)
05/2013: Fashion Beast #9 - 5,085 (-4.5%)

Penultimate issue, the drops increasing again.

288. Akaneiro (Dark Horse)

05/2013: Akaneiro #1 - 5,172

This is a tie-in to a new game from American McGee, the creator of the Alice games.

About to be relaunched again as part of Aspen’s book a month promotion.

286. Bart Simpson Comics (Bongo)

03/2013: TMNT Color Classics Micro Donatello - 6,000 (+20.4%)
04/2013: TMNT Color Classics Micro Leonardo - 5,615 (-6.4%)
05/2013: TMNT Color Classics #10 - 5,268 (-6.2%)

Still dropping very fast, probably not too much longer for this series, unless the collections are doing well..

283. Miniature Jesus (Image)

04/2013: Miniature Jesus #1 - 8,363
05/2013: Miniature Jesus #2 - 5,297 (-36.7%)

A big drop, but then that first issue sold well in excess of any of McKeever’s other recent books, so this is probably a little closer to normal sales.

281. GFT Werewolves Hunger (Zenescope)

05/2013: GFT Werewolves Hunger #1 - 5,356
279. GFT Hunters Shadowlands (Zenescope)

05/2013: GFT Hunters Shadowlands #1 - 5,408
278. GFT Unleashed Vampires Eternal (Zenescope)

04/2013: GFT Unleashed Vampires Eternal #1 - 7,009
05/2013: GFT Unleashed Vampires Eternal #2 - 5,435 (-22.5%)

3 new tie-in mini series to the Unleashed cross-over, selling a little on the low-side for Zenescope books, but then they are moving away from the bad-girl books that make up the majority of their line. I’m not sure if this has any connection to Vampire the Masquerade, the White Wolf RPG which also feature Vampires, Werewolves and Hunters, or whether they just draw from the same inspiration.

280.Creepy Comics (Dark Horse)

05/2012: -

====

06/2012: -
07/2012: Creepy Comics #9 - 5,632 (+2.3%)

03/2013: Five Weapons #2 - 6,196 (-19.7%)
04/2013: Five Weapons #3 - 5,655 (-8.7%)
05/2013: Five Weapons #4 - 5,472 (-3.2%)

Settling down, I hope this book’s done well enough to earn a sequel.

276. Prophet (Image)

05/2012: Prophet #25 - 6,390

====

06/2012: Prophet #26 - 6,275 (-1.8%)

02/2013: Prophet #34 - 5,429 (-2.6%)
02/2013: Prophet #34 - 5,429 (-2.6%)
03-04/2013: -
05/2013: Prophet #35 - 5,522 (+1.7%)

Returning after a slight gap, which doesn’t seem to have hurt sales at all.

275. Red Sonja Unchained (Dynamite)

02/2013: Red Sonja Unchained #1 - 6,275
03-04/2013: -
05/2013: Red Sonja Unchained #2 - 5,540 (-11.7%)

Bit of a delay I think, this is only a four issue series.

274. Call of Wonderland (Zenescope)

05/2012: Call of Wonderland #1 - 7,852
06/2012: Call of Wonderland #2 - 7,418 (-5.5%)

04/2013: Madness of Wonderland #3 - 5,825 (+1.3%)

Final issue, fairly smooth.

02-04/2013: -

Whilce Portacio’s first project for Image in a long time, and suffering Nineties’ style delays.

====

06/2012: Artifacts #18 - 6,464 (-6.1%)

09/2012: Artifacts #21 - 5,814 (-4.2%)
10/2012: Artifacts #22 - 5,797 (-0.3%)

04/2013: -
05/2013: Artifacts #27 - 5,750 (+12.8%)

I would imagine that this increase is down to the reintroduction of The Magdalena into the Top Cow universe.

271. Mind MGMT (Dark Horse)

05/2012: Mind MGMT #1 - 7,537

====

06/2012: Mind MGMT #2 - 5,566 (-26.2%)

04/2013: Mind MGMT #10 - 5,842 (+0.7%)
05/2013: Mind MGMT #11 - 5,824 (-0.3%)

Hmm, I thought this might continue increasing a bit further, but it is a niche title regardless of any possible film or TV show.

269. Jirni (Aspen)

04/2013: Jirni #1 - 35,777
05/2013: Jirni #2 - 5,915 (-83.5%)

Relatively solid, if slightly dogged by delays.

04/2013: Vampirella #28 - 6,118 (-6.8%)

The smallest drop for a while, maybe this is starting to level out.

04/2013: Kiss Solo #2 The Starchild - 6,676 (-7.0%)
05/2013: Kiss Solo #3 The Celestial - 6,283 (-5.9%)

Can’t see too much more life in this series, although there’s a Kiss Kids title coming, which may do okay.

263. Pathfinder (Dynamite)

08/2012: Pathfinder #1 - 14,277
09/2012: -
10/2012: Pathfinder #2 - 9,362 (-34.4%)

04/2013: Grimm Fairy Tales #84 - 6,284 (+1.0%)
05/2013: Grimm Fairy Tales #85 - 6,499 (+3.4%)

Grimm Fairy Tales itself crosses over with Unleashed, not gaining much of a jump, but then it’s a six-dollar book. Wonderland continues creeping up.

259. Damsels Mermaids (Dynamite)

05/2013: Damsels Mermaids #1 - 6,564

Not quite sure why Damsels, which hasn’t exactly set the world on fire saleswise, gets a spin-off, but here it is!

258. Vampirella Strikes (Dynamite)

12/2012: Vampirella Strikes #1 - 14,862
01/2013: -
02/2013: Vampirella Strikes #2 - 7,972 (-46.4%)

04/2013: Vampirella Strikes #4 - 6,893 (-7.6%)
05/2013: Vampirella Strikes #5 - 6,632 (-3.8%)

The penultimate issue of this surprisingly punctual mini-series (when compared to many other Dynamite titles), and sales appear to be settling down.

257. House of Gold & Bones (Dark Horse )

04/2013: House of Gold & Bones #1 - 8,635
05/2013: House of Gold & Bones #2 - 6,635(-23.2%)

An average second-issue drop, but I still think this book is being under-ordered, and current prices on ebay would appear to back me up.

256. Warlord of Mars Dejah Thoris (Dynamite)

04/2013: Dejah Thoris #24 - 7,059 (+5.4%)
05/2013: Dejah Thoris #25 - 6,724 (-4.7%)

Dropping most of last issue’s gains, but still not too bad for a book like this.

255. Godzilla (IDW)

====

06/2012: Godzilla #2 - 9,753 (-18.7%)

04/2013: Clone #6 - 7,460 (-7.6%)
05/2013: Clone #7 - 6,956 (-6.8%)

Sadly this shows no sign of levelling out, losing around 500 readers a month over the past few.

250. Polarity (Boom!)

04/2013: Polarity #1 - 7,459
05/2013: Polarity #2 - 6,957 (-6.7%)

That’s a very good drop, but this book seems to have been under-ordered a bit, with a second print for the first issue.

249. Half Past Danger (Image)

05/2013: Half Past Danger #1 - 7,048 (8,500)

That second figure was the sold-out print run, as reported over at Bleeding Cool, with a second print coming. That’s very good sales for this debut book from Irishman Stephen Mooney. First appearance was in last year’s Thought Bubble Anthology, speculators!

05/2013: Red Sonja #76 - 5,272 (-25.5%)

Gains for the seventy-fifth issue, but drops back down with the next issue. The relaunch is coming.

04/2013: Witchblade Day o/t Outlaw - 5,636
05/2013: Witchblade #166 - 7,425 (+2.2%)

A very small increase. Still not massively healthy looking.

05/2013: Real American Hero #190 - 7,550 (+0.7%)

This seems to have stabilized pretty well, and at high enough level that Larry Hama can probably continue forever if it stays like this.

245. Mind The Gap (Image)

04/2013: Mind The Gap #9 - 8,074 (-2.1%)
05/2013: Mind The Gap #10 - 7,584 (-6.1%)

Just when it seemed to be levelling out, the larger drops resume. This is one of those books that really should be selling better, it’s enormously good fun.

243. EA Poe Fall O/T House of Usher

11/2012: EA Poe Conqueror Worm One-Shot - 6,930
05/2013: EA Poe Fall O/T House of Usher #1 - 7,650 (+10.4%)

A two-parter from Richard Corben, seeing a nice increase from the previous one-shot.

241. GI Joe Cobra Files (IDW)

05/2013: Crossed Badlands #28 - 7,891 (-0.5%)
05/2013: Crossed Badlands #29 - 7,595 (-3.7%)

Back to round about the same level as before Garth Ennis’s second run started. The plan seems to be to bring him back once a year to revitalize things, which should keep sales relatively healthy for a while at least.

238. Dream Thief (Dark Horse)

05/2013: Dream Thief #1 - 7,927

The first of two new dream-based series this month, I didn’t get a chance to read this one as it had sold out everywhere. Which is a good thing I suppose.

236. Bravest Warriors (Boom!)

04/2013: Bravest Warriors #7 - 8,311 (-2.8%)
05/2013: Bravest Warriors #8 - 8,146 (-2.0%)

This seems to be settling into a slow decline, but it’s still one of Boom’s higher selling regular series.

04/2013: Danger Girl Trinity #1 - 12,063 (+15.4%)
05/2013: Danger Girl Trinity #2 - 8,167 (-32.3%)

A fairly hefty drop, not sure how long people will want to read a Campbell-less Danger Girls.

233. Robyn Hood (Zenescope)

10/2012: Robyn Hood #1 - 11,330
10/2012: Robyn Hood #2 - 6,963 (-38.5%)

A decent jump for the new mini-series.

Yikes, that’s the biggest drop for a while.

04/2013: Spotlight Trailcutter #1 - 8,690 (-4.5%)
05/2013: Spotlight Hoist #1- 8,373 (-3.6%)

04/2013: -
05/2013: Game of Thrones #14 - 8,468 (-5.7%)

Considering the popularity of the TV show, I’m surprised by the plunging drops this book suffers. Still it’s really a feeder for Harper Collins’ collections.

04/2013: Rocketeer Hollywood Horror #3 - 9,212 (-7.0%)
05/2013: Rocketeer Hollywood Horror #4 - 8,885 (-3.5%)

The last issue of this mini. I can see a big increase next month, as Mark Waid returns, joined by The Spirit, and the amazing Paul Smith who, bar a random Kitty Pryde mini-series, we haven’t seen much of since Leave it to Chance over a decade ago.

224. Transformers Prime (IDW)

11/2012: Rage o/t Dinobots #1 - 9,613

An okay increase for the new mini-series.

223. Occupy Comics (Black Mask)

05/2013: Occupy Comics #1 - 8,977

A new anthology book in support of the Occupy movement. It was funded initially through Kickstarter and features a fairly heavyweight creator list, including one A. Moore.

A bit of a drop this month, but it’s held up overall very well.

04/2013: Mega Man #24 - 11,173 (+109.3%)
05/2013: Mega Man #25 - 9,191 (-17.7%)

A slight drop, but still way above normal sales for month two of the Sonic crossover.

218. The Massive (Dark Horse)

Things really seem to have settled down for this book now; it actually wouldn’t surprise me if it went back up a bit at some point.

04/2013: Transformers Robots In Disguise #16 - 9,700 (-0.1%)
05/2013: Transformers Robots In Disguise #17 - 9,540 (-1.6%)

The three Transformers books are all pretty much on a par, very slowly slipping down but not at any speed at the moment.

215. GFT Wonderland Down The Rabbit Hole (Zenescope)

05/2013: Down The Rabbit Hole #1 - 9,734

That’s a good launch number, one of Zenescope’s highest yet.

214. Lost Vegas (Image)

03/2013: Lost Vegas #1 - 15,273
04/2013: Lost Vegas #2 - 10,608 (-30.5%)
05/2013: Lost Vegas #3 - 9,755 (-8.0%)

An okay third issue drop, these are pretty decent figures for this fun little sci-fi heist book.

213. Lobster Johnson (Dark Horse)

05/2012: The Burning Hand #5 - 9,506

====

06-07/2012: -

A new one-shot drawn by Kevin Nowlan, squarely in the usual sales range for Mr Johnson.

212. GI Joe (IDW)

04/2013: GI Joe Vol 3 #3 -10,372 (-5.5%)

Rapidly heading back towards the previous series’ sales.

211. Mark Waid's Green Hornet (Dynamite)

03/2013: Mark Waid's Green Hornet #1 - 15,114
05/2013: Mark Waid's Green Hornet #2 - 10,012 (-33.8%)

By Dynamite standards this isn’t too bad a drop-off, and so far it’s miles above the level of the original series.

208. Judge Dredd (IDW)

11/2012: Judge Dredd #1 - 32,266
12/2012: Judge Dredd #2 - 13,995 (-56.6%)

04/2013: Judge Dredd #6 - 10,670 (-6.8%)
05/2013: Judge Dredd #7 - 10,058 (-5.7%)

Not settling down, although you would imagine sales in the UK are probably fairly significant.

207. Helheim (Oni)

03/2013: Helheim #1 - 11,877
04/2013: Helheim #2 - 10,256 (-13.6%)
05/2013: Helheim #3 - 10,118 (-1.3%)

Smoothing right out very quickly, this is a solid hit for Oni.

206. Doomsday.1 (IDW)

05/2013: Doomsday.1 #1 - 10,230

That’s Byrne’s best launch in a while, almost a thousand copies higher than Trio, his next highest in the last five years or so.

203. Abe Sapien (Dark Horse )

06/2010: Abe Sapien Abysmal Plain #1 - 13,010 (+3.9%)

05/2013: Abe Sapien Dark & Terrible #2 - 10,445 (-11.4%)

On the run from the BPRD, Abe Sapien’s new ongoing has a good second issue drop, and looks like it will slot in just below BPRD sales-wise.

199. Clive Barker Next Testament (Boom!)

05/2013: Next Testament #1 - 10,797

Plotted by Barker, this is a new god book. It was initially called New Genesis, but DC has their own New Gods living there, and objected.

202. BPRD (Dark Horse)

197. BPRD Vampire (Dark Horse)

04/2013: Vampire #2 - 11,072 (-11.2%)
05/2013: Vampire #3 - 10,849 (-2.0%)

It looks like both BPRD books are going to stay at around the ten and a half thousand mark, which is perfectly respectable.

196. Suicide Risk (Boom!)

05/2013: Suicide Risk #1 - 10,913

A decent start for Mike Carey’s new superhero book, about a cop that gets himself powers to try to take down the super-villains that are destroying his city. I enjoyed it, and it’s sold out and gone to second print.

195. X (Dark Horse)

04/2013: X #0 - 7,502
05/2013: X #1 - 11,071 (+47.6%)

A very good jump for the first issue proper of this new ongoing, the second of the characters from the Worlds Greatest Heroes line to be revised, with more to come.

194. Invincible Universe (Image)

09/2012: Guarding The Globe #1 - 10,183
10/2012: Guarding The Globe #2 - 7,104 (-30.2%)

04/2013: Invincible Universe #1 - 14,526 (+200.7%)
05/2013: Invincible Universe #2 - 11,102 (-23.6%)

Not a bad second issue drop, it’s still more than double the sales before the renaming.

192. Bloodshot (Valiant)

07/2012: Bloodshot #1 - 29,224
08/2012: Bloodshot #2 - 16,024 (-45.2%)
09/2012: Bloodshot #3 - 14,517 (-9.4%)
10/2012: Bloodshot #4 - 14,382 (-0.9%)

04/2013: Bloodshot #10 - 13,376 (+22.0%)
05/2013: Bloodshot #11 - 11,146 (-16.7%)

Losing most of last issue’s gains, this book will be all over the place while the Harbinger crossover continues.

190. Miss Fury (Dynamite)

04/2013: Miss Fury #1 - 18,441
05/2013: Miss Fury #2 - 11,306 (-38.7%)

A fairly hefty drop, but still a decent level for a long forgotten pulp character. It’s good fun as well.

188. TMNT Micro Series (IDW)

05/2012: -

====

06/2012: TMNT Micro Series #5 Splinter - 15,769 (-3.0%)

04/2013: Villain Micro Series #1 Krang - 13,689 (+2.5%)
05/2013: Villain Micro Series #2 Baxter Stockman - 11,360 (-17.0%)

A predictable drop, for one of the lesser known Turtles villains.

186. The Shadow (Dynamite)

04/2013: The Shadow #12 - 10,815 (-2.7%)
05/2013: The Shadow #13 - 11,474 (+5.7%)

A decent increase, for no apparent reason that I can see. Maybe a decent variant cover?

05/2013: Sonic Universe #52 - 11,500 (+16.0%)

Another big increase as the Worlds Collide crossover continues.

183. 12 Reasons to Die (Black Mask)

05/2013: 12 Reasons To Die #1 - 11,384

Created by Ghostface Killah & RZA of the Wu Tang Clan, this ties into Ghostface’s new album. Not bad sales at all.

182. Doctor Who Ongoing (IDW)

05/2010: Doctor Who #11 - 6,743 (-0.6%)
05/2011: Doctor Who Vol. 2 #5 - 7,498 (+0.3%)

04/2013: Doctor Who Vol. 3 #8 - 10,414 (+1.0%)
05/2013: Doctor Who Vol. 3 #9 - 11,993 (+15.2%)

Ben Templesmith does the art this issue, which probably explains the increase.

05/2013: Star Trek Ongoing #20 - 10,508 (+0.9%)
05/2013: Star Trek Ongoing #21 - 12,055 (+14.7%)

The film hits, so IDW sensibly tie the comic in directly and get a good increase for their efforts.

179. Archer & Armstrong (Valiant)

08/2012: Archer & Armstrong #1 - 23,464
09/2012: Archer & Armstrong #2 - 14,539 (-38.0%)

04/2013: Archer & Armstrong #9 - 11,125 (+0.5%)
05/2013: Archer & Armstrong #0 - 12,076

A good jump for the #0 issue, but things should settle down over the next couple of issues.

03/2013: Fire Carrier #2 - 13,077 (-8.6%)

05/2013: Fire Carrier #4 - 12,138 (-2.4%)

The lowest selling of the Star Wars books, but it looks like Dark Horse are sticking with it for the moment, with Doug Wheatley coming back to art fresh off his Avengers gig for the next arc.

177. Sonic the Hedgehog (Archie)

05/2008: Sonic #188 - 7,100

05/2013: Sonic #248 - 12,158 (+35.0%)
05/2013: Sonic #249 - 11,339 (-6.7%)

A bit of a drop, but sales are still way up for the crossover.

The second Valiant zero issue this month, also seeing a nice increase.

172. King Conan (Dark Horse)

05/2011: Scarlet Citadel #4 - 12,040

====

05/2013: Hour of The Dragon #1 - 12,566

04/2013: Morning Glories #26 - 20,918 (+152.1%)
05/2013: Morning Glories #27 - 12,861 (-38.5%)

Dropping back down, but still well above where it was before last issue. There are a lot of variant covers over these next few issues as well.

165. The Shadow Year One (Dynamite)

02/2013: Shadow Year One #1 - 19,310
04/2013: Shadow Year One #2 - 13,748 (-28.9%)
05/2013: Shadow Year One #3 - 13,035 (-5.2%)

Smoothing out, and a good way above the main title.

163. Doctor Who Prisoners of Time (IDW)

04/2013: -
05/2013: Dawn O/T Jedi Prisoner of Bogan #5 - 13,304 (-3.1%)

The end of this series, going on a break for a bit, but will no doubt be back before the end of the year.

159. X-O Manowar (Valiant)

05/2013: X-O Manowar #13 - 13,305 (+0.7%)

Holding very solidly for the Planet War storyline.

158. Angel & Faith (Dark Horse)

05/2008: After the Fall #8 - 45,430
05/2009: Angel #21 - 28,633

04/2013: Angel & Faith #21 - 14,102 (-1.0%)
05/2013: Angel & Faith #22 - 13,895 (-1.5%)

The most standard of attrition.

156. Dream Merchant (Image)

05/2013: Dream Merchant #1 - 14,024

The other dream-based debut this month, coming in a bit higher than the Dream Thief, with pretty good sales.

153. Battlestar Galactica (Dynamite)

05/2013: Battlestar Galactica #1 - 14,356

A return to the classic version of the series, this isn’t a bad figure at all.

148, 226, 230, 237. Image Firsts (Image)

12/2012: Image Firsts Walking Dead #1 - 16,253 (40,834)
12/2012: Image Firsts Saga #1 - 10,536 (18,627)
12/2012: Image Firsts Thief Of Thieves #1 - 6,292

12/2012: Image Firsts Fatale #1 - 5,330
12/2012: Image Firsts Revival #1 - 5,012
05/2013: Image Firsts Peter Panzerfaust #1 - 8,756
05/2013: Image Firsts Invincible #1 - 8,424

New editions for Peter Panzerfaust and Invincible do very well, in the case of Panzerfaust almost doubling what the actual first issue sold, while Walking Dead and Saga sell a further 15,254 and 8,091 respectively. I would guess that these are largely being used as samplers for the graphic novels.

147. Star Wars Darth Vader (Dark Horse)

05/2012: Ghost Prison #1 - 22,026

====

06/2012: Ghost Prison #2 - 16,858 (-23.5%)

04/2013: Ninth Assassin #1 - 17,278 (+28.7%)
05/2013: Ninth Assassin #2 - 15,322 (-11.3%)

Doing better than the last series it would appear, although you would think that he could be over-used as a character, I’m not sure that he has the depth of character.

144. Harbinger Wars (Valiant)

03/2013: Harbinger Wars #1 - 18,729
04/2013: -
05/2013: Harbinger Wars #2 - 15,455 (-17.5%)

A decent drop, this is this month’s best-selling Valiant book.

143. Grimm (Dynamite)

05/2013: Grimm #1 - 15,455

A tie-in to the monster hunter/cop show, and not at all bad.

141. Nowhere Men (Image)

11/2012: Nowhere Men #1 - 11,815
12/2012: Nowhere Men #2 - 7,368 (-37.6%)

02/2013: -
03/2013: Nowhere Men #4 - 13,368 (+80.1%)
04/2013: -
05/2013: Nowhere Men #5 - 15,608 (+14.3%)

Jumping up in sales as retailers finally realise how popular the book actually is.

137, 292. Uber (Avatar)

04/2013: Uber #0 - 10,849
05/2013: Uber #1 - 16,109 (+32.6%)
05/2013: Uber #0 Enhanced Edition - 5,084

A big jump for issue one, and a reprint of the zero issue does pretty well too.

134. Revival (Image)

07/2012: Revival #1 - 18,039
08/2012: Revival #2 - 10,486 (-41.9%)
09/2012: Revival #3 - 13,943 (+33.0%)
10/2012: Revival #4 - 15,251 (+9.4%)
11/2012: Revival #5 - 14,098 (-7.6%)
01/2013: Revival #6 - 17,396 (+23.4%)
02/2013: Revival #7 - 16,639 (-4.4%)
03/2013: Revival #8 - 17,082 (+2.7%)
04/2013: Revival #9 - 16,977 (-0.6%)
05/2013: Revival #10 - 16,314 (-3.9%)

Very up and down, this obviously hasn’t quite found its level. Very good sales though.

133. Black Bat (Dynamite)

05/2013: Black Bat #1 - 16,328

This month’s pulp character launch, written by Flash writer Brian Buccallato, sells a couple thousand less than Ms Fury did.

132. Star Wars Legacy (Dark Horse)

05/2008: Star Wars Legacy #23 - 30,355
05/2009: Star Wars Legacy #36 - 24,166
05/2010: Star Wars Legacy #48 - 19,954
05/2011: Star Wars Legacy War #6 - 17,944

====

03/2013: Star Wars Legacy #1 - 21,600
04/2013: Star Wars Legacy #2 - 16,384 (-24.1%)
05/2013: Star Wars Legacy #3 - 16,497 (+0.7%)

A small increase on the third issue, this seems to have been slightly under-ordered; it wouldn’t surprise me if there is a bit more growth in this series.

131. Spawn (Image)

05/2008: Spawn #178 - 20,046

04/2013: Spawn #230 - 15,994 (-2.2%)
05/2013: Spawn #231 - 16,502 (+3.2%)

Continuing the tribute covers, this issue riffs on McFarlane’s own cover for Spider-Man #1.

Andy Diggle comes on board as co-writer, and sees a decent increase in sales.

05/2013: Fatale #14 - 17,557 (-0.6%)

Still really very solid, and holding up at a very good level, higher than Criminal at this point I think.

115. Sex (Image)

03/2013: Sex #1 - 23,630 (29,298)
04/2013: Sex #2 - 21,342 (-9.7%)
05/2013: Sex #3 - 20,509 (-3.9%)

Smoothing out remarkably well, this seems to be a decent hit for Joe Casey.

05/2013: Adventure Time #16 - 21,659 (-0.1%)
05/2013: Adventure Time Annual #1 - 20,975

Fionna & Cake has its best sales yet, while the more expensive Annual sells at almost the same level as the series.

105. Buffy TVS (Dark Horse)

05/2008: Buffy the Vampire Slayer #14 - 82,069

05/2013: Buffy TVS Season 9 #21 - 21,701 (-0.9%)

Settled into a pretty solid rut, it may not be selling what it was five or six years ago, but it’s still one of the best-selling licensed books.

104. Chin Music (Image)

05/2013: Chin Music #1 - 22,383

Steve Niles & Tony Harris’s new gangster-horror book launches well, although it’s already being hit by delays.

103. My Little Pony Micro Series (IDW)

02/2013: Twilight Sparkle #1 - 34,435
03/2013: Rainbow Dash #1 - 25,473 (-26.0%)
04/2013: Rarity #1 - 23,338 (-8.4%)
05/2013: Fluttershy #1 - 22,489 (-3.6%)

Sales are settling down, and I’m hearing reports that other My Little Pony merchandise has picked up enormously in comic shops as a direct result of this book bringing in new customers.

98. Sesame Street (Ape)

05/2013: Sesame Street #1 - 23,765

A very strong start and Ape’s best-selling book ever by quite some way.

95. The Bounce (Image)

05/2013: The Bounce #1 - 24, 259

Joe Casey’s other new book hits at a slightly higher sales level than Sex.

90. Charismagic (Aspen)

05/2013: Charismagic Vol 2 #1 - 25,212

These seem like good sales, but it’s a dollar book, and ten thousand or so copies behind the other two new launches, both of which dropped to five thousand with their second issues. Legend of the Shadowclan, the first one, has dropped off the chart with its third issue.

78. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (IDW)

05/2012: TMNT #10 - 19,254

====

06/2012: TMNT #11 - 19,416 (+0.1%)

03/2013: TMNT #20 - 16,084 (-0.3%)
04/2013: TMNT #21 - 20,659 (+28.4%)
05/2013: TMNT #22 - 27,759 (+34.4%)

Another huge increase, evidently as a result of creator Peter Laird returning to art duties.

68. My Little Pony (IDW)

11/2012: - My Little Pony #1 - 80,128 (95,384)
12/2012: - My Little Pony #2 - 39,841 (-50.3%)
01/2013: -
02/2013: - My Little Pony #3 - 43,579 (+9.4%)
02/2013: - MLP #1 & #2 Hot Topic Pack - 8,988
03/2013: - My Little Pony #4 - 41,541 (-4.7%)
03/2013: - My Little Pony #5 - 36,354 (-12.5%)
04/2013: - My Little Pony #6 - 33,903 (-6.7%)
05/2013: - My Little Pony #7 - 32,188 (-5.1%)

Dropping quite fast, but sales are at such a high level that it’s not a big deal at all at the moment. Might be if it doesn’t stabilize soon, but currently all is sweet.

56. Regular Show (Boom!)

05/2013: Regular Show #1 - 38,466

Much delayed, but a smash hit. Pretty sure this is Boom’s biggest ever initial sales, even beating Deathmatch #1, which only cost a dollar. I think in the long run it’ll end up a little behind Adventure Time sales-wise, but this is a great start.

41. Star Wars (Dark Horse)

01/2013: Star Wars #1 - 39,663 (63,410)
02/2013: Star Wars #2 - 46,063 (+16.1%)
03/2013: Star Wars #3 - 45,522 (-1.2%)
04/2013: Star Wars #4 - 45,019 (-1.1%)
05/2013: Star Wars #5 - 44,310 (-1.6%)

This has settled down at a very high level for a Star Wars book, with an adaptation of the original plot of Episode IV coming up in a couple of months

24. Ten Grand (Image)

05/2013: Ten Grand #1 - 57,216

A huge launch for JM Straczinski’s first indie book in some time. It’s sold-out and gone to second print as well.

13. The Walking Dead (Image)

05/2008: The Walking Dead #49 - 23,102

08/2012: The Walking Dead #101 - 51,732 (-85.9%)
09/2012: The Walking Dead #102 - 53,337 (+3.1%)
10/2012: The Walking Dead #103 - 74,378 (+39.4%)
10/2012: The Walking Dead Michone Special - 49,930 (60,633)
11/2012: The Walking Dead #104 - 57,456 (-22.8%)
12/2012: The Walking Dead #105 - 57,781 (+0.6%)
01/2013: The Walking Dead #106 - 70,526 (+22.1%)
02/2013: The Walking Dead #107 - 63,575 (-9.9%)
02/2013: The Walking Dead The Governor Special - 51,355
03/2013: The Walking Dead #108 - 67,423 (+6.1%)
04/2013: The Walking Dead #109 - 90,362 (+34.0%)
05/2013: The Walking Dead #110 - 76,455 (-15.4%)

A bit of a drop, but this is still the third best-selling issue of the book yet. More remarkably, it’s a completely ordinary issue, no variants and the second part of the arc. It’s now selling twice what it was two years ago.

======

All figures on this chart are estimates for comics sold by Diamond to direct market retailers. They include reorders that shipped in the same month. Books shipping in the first week of a month will have more time for reorders to appear than ones shipping in the last week of the month, when reorders will slip to the following month.

  1. Is Doug Wheatley really doing Avengers, or are you confusing him with Dustin Weaver (who drew some very pretty Star Wars issues, way back when). I believe Wheatley is just not the fastest, but that he’s been working on more Dark Times for a while.

Looking at the sales of a franchise like G.I. Joe, I’m tempted to suggest that maybe the market doesn’t need four books… but as is often the case, the lowest-selling is of course the stand-out book.

And Game of Thrones, well, the show may be very popular, but it’s also spoiled us in terms of how well it’s turning the books into visuals. What I’ve seen of the comic simply doesn’t compare.

  2. Five Weapons: “Settling down, I hope this book’s done well enough to earn a sequel.”

It has indeed. It is now ongoing. I know the numbers are not huge, but I am happy that Image Comics / Shadowline has faith in the title and that I can grow an audience over time.

  3. Niels – doh, yes indeed, similar names, similarly delicate styles.

Jimmy – I was delighted to hear it, looking forward to the new run!

Fillippod – then you’ll be happier to hear it charts next month – at number 300 :p

  4. “This seems to have stabilized pretty well, and at high enough level that Larry Hama can probably continue forever if it stays like this.”

Man, I hope so. This is a great read every month.

  5. STAR WARS is Brian Wood’s continuation of Episode 4. The book that adapts the original Episode 4 plot/script – called THE STAR WARS – is another title entirely.

  6. Awesome news for Five Weapons. I have yet to read the final issue of the first arc but I have loved every issue and have been hooked right out of the gate. :)

  7. So excited that I found a breakdown of indie comic sales… thank you so much for whoever puts in all the hard work for this. Does this usually come out about a month after the numbers from Diamond get released?

  8. It’s usually 2-3 weeks afterwards, there was a minor scheduling snafu this month. Thanks for your kind words!

  9. Huge jump this month for a regular issue of TMNT. I thought for sure it would drop back down after Eastman’s issue. Pretty impressive.

Hoping this might finally convince IDW to print the TMNT Adventures Forever War mini!! I will literally pay any price they decide to make it!! $5 an issue would still be a bargain to see this in print!! :)

  10. Glad to see DW: Prisoners of Time still doing very well. I thought last month’s spike might have been due to the Fourth Doctor(consistently among the most popular versions of the character) being featured. I think I might have been right. :)

  11. Bummer that Blackacre doesn’t appear on the charts as it’s a really interesting book. I’m very much enjoying Mind The Gap and The Massive as well and agree that they should be selling better!

  12. “Continuing the tribute covers, this issue riffs on McFarlane’s own cover for Spider-Man #1.”
So they re-released Spawn #8? Sneaky SOBs. I’ve been fairly busy as of late and though I thought I had been checking out all the new series that sounded interesting to me, looking at this list it seems like I’ve ignored a ton of them. I can’t recall half the books on this list. I think that’s a good thing for indie books but I’m going to have to get myself better organized on Wednesdays! Excel spreadsheet time!
