My sincerest apologies for both the lateness and the brevity of this month’s column. I’m in the middle of a move to a new city, and have just started a new job, so time has been especially scarce this month. I’ve not been able to comment on many of the titles towards the lower end of the chart, and I suspect next month will be very similar. Things should be back to normal by the February chart though!

It was a relatively quiet December, Bill Willingham’s Legenderry the highest charting new entry amongst the usual bumper-selling Image titles, a couple of Star Wars books and My Little Pony. Elsewhere, it’s a very downward trending chart, with only 11 titles going up in sales and a colossal 123 going down, with the rest made up of new entries and specials.

151 indie titles charted in the top 300, barely up on last month’s 150. Despite that, the indie chart sold approximately 1,700,440 comics, down on last month’s 1,820,321. The average sales this month are 11,261, down on last month’s 12,153.

IDW enjoy a rare month atop the pile, as they score an 8.18% dollar share and a 6.17% market share, helped by Locke and Key’s last, pricey, issue, while Image have a 7.32% dollar share and 8.07% market share, due to only one issue of Walking Dead shipping. Dark Horse have a 6.28% dollar share and a 6.35% market share, Dynamite have a 3.22% dollar share and 3.25% market share and Boom! have a 2.06% dollar share and 2.12% market share.

UK and European sales from Diamond UK are not reported in this chart.

Thanks to icv2.com and Milton Griepp for permission to use these numbers, which are estimates, and can be found here.

11/2013: The Walking Dead #117 - 68,818 (-1.6%)
12/2013: The Walking Dead #118 - 68,020 (-1.2%)

A slow decline at the moment, but nothing to be concerned about.

29. Saga (Image)

12/2012: Saga #8 - 42,324 (48,965)

====

01/2013: Saga #9 - 45,629 (+7.8%)
02/2013: Saga #10 - 48,388 (+6.0%)
03/2013: Saga #11 - 50,023 (+3.4%)

10/2013: Saga #15 - 54,816 (-1.4%)
11/2013: Saga #16 - 54,593 (-0.4%)
12/2013: Saga #17 - 53,264 (-2.4%)

The largest drop this year, but a new arc starts very soon, and should bring a boost.

35, 39. The Star Wars (Dark Horse)

09/2013: The Star Wars #1 - 78,467
10/2013: The Star Wars #2 - 56,165 (-28.4%)
11/2013: The Star Wars #3 - 50,346 (-10.4%)
12/2013: The Star Wars #4 - 47,292 (-6.1%)
12/2013: The Star Wars #0 - 40,531

The drops are getting smaller, and a zero issue also pulls in good sales.

56. Star Wars (Dark Horse)

01/2013: Star Wars #1 - 39,663 (63,410)
02/2013: Star Wars #2 - 46,063 (+16.1%)
03/2013: Star Wars #3 - 45,522 (-1.2%)
04/2013: Star Wars #4 - 45,019 (-1.1%)
05/2013: Star Wars #5 - 44,310 (-1.6%)
06/2013: Star Wars #6 - 42,806 (-3.4%)
07/2013: Star Wars #7 - 41,611 (-2.8%)
08/2013: Star Wars #8 - 38,792 (-6.8%)
09/2013: Star Wars #9 - 37,502 (-3.3%)
10/2013: Star Wars #10 - 36,019 (-3.9%)
10/2013: 1-for-1 Star Wars #1 - 16,690 (-3.9%)
11/2013: Star Wars #11 - 34,227 (-5.0%)
12/2013: Star Wars #12 - 33,093 (-3.3%)

Still dropping a bit quickly, but the loss of the license to Marvel probably means that isn’t much to worry about.

62. East of West (Image)

03/2013: East of West #1 - 49,518 (64,284)
04/2013: East of West #2 - 41,838 (-15.5%)
05/2013: -
06/2013: East of West #3 - 39,441 (-5.7%)
07/2013: East of West #4 - 43,228 (+9.6%)
08/2013: East of West #5 - 36,345 (-15.9%)
09/2013: East of West #6 - 33,381 (-8.2%)
10/2013: -
11/2013: East of West #7 - 32,889 (-1.4%)
12/2013: East of West #8 - 31,059 (-5.6%)

A larger drop this month, but solidly established as Image’s third best-selling book.

74. Legenderry (Dynamite)

12/2013: Legenderry #1 - 27,174

A steampunk re-imagining of many of Dynamite’s licensed characters, written by Bill Willingham (although for how long?), launches quite strongly, although way behind the likes of Masks or Flash Gordon.

78. Velvet (Image)

10/2013: Velvet #1 - 41,897
11/2013: -
12/2013: Velvet #2 - 25,549 (-39.0%)

A typical Image second-issue drop, maybe not quite as large as most, and still at a decent level.

92. My Little Pony (IDW)

12/2012: My Little Pony #2 - 39,841 (-50.3%)

====

01/2013: -
02/2013: My Little Pony #3 - 43,579 (+9.4%)
02/2013: MLP #1 & #2 Hot Topic Pack - 8,988
03/2013: My Little Pony #4 - 41,541 (-4.7%)
03/2013: My Little Pony #5 - 36,354 (-12.5%)
04/2013: My Little Pony #6 - 33,903 (-6.7%)
05/2013: My Little Pony #7 - 32,188 (-5.1%)
06/2013: My Little Pony #8 - 33,114 (+2.9%)
06/2013: My Little Pony Color Me Treasury Ed - 4,810
07/2013: My Little Pony #9 - 35,153 (41,444) (+6.2%)
08/2013: My Little Pony #10 - 24,475 (31,860) (-30.4%)
08/2013: My Little Pony Cover Gallery #1 - 6,859
09/2013: My Little Pony #11 - 32,784 (+33.9%)
10/2013: My Little Pony #12 - 23,686 (-27.7%)
10/2013: My Little Pony 2013 Annual - 18,614
11/2013: My Little Pony #13 - 35,653 (+50.5%)
11/2013: My Little Pony Art Gallery - 6,028
12/2013: My Little Pony Art #14 - 22,990 (-35.5%)

By far the most volatile book in the charts, taking another huge dive. It’ll probably go back up next month.

95. Lazarus (Image)

05/2013: Lazarus #1 - 48,030
07/2013: Lazarus #2 - 27,143 (31,470)(-43.5%)
08/2013: Lazarus #3 - 24,961 (-8.0%)
09/2013: -
10/2013: Lazarus #4 - 23,701 (-5.0%)
11/2013: -
12/2013: Lazarus #5 - 22,695(-4.2%)

Slowly settling down sales-wise, and at a very healthy level for Greg Rucka’s excellent sci-fi book.

104. Twilight Zone (Dynamite)

12/2013: Twilight Zone #1 - 21,723

JM Straczynski launches a comic version of the famed sci-fi twist series. I suspect these sales are more for the writer than the property, I can’t see this book lasting too long, especially if JMS doesn’t stick around beyond the initial arc. There are a lot of good sci-fi books around at the moment.

108. Pretty Deadly (Image)

10/2013: Pretty Deadly #1 - 45,883
11/2013: Pretty Deadly #2 - 23,581 (-48.6%)
12/2013: Pretty Deadly #3 - 21,079 (-10.6%)

After such a precipitous plunge last month, this is a decent third-issue drop.

110. Hellboy (Dark Horse)

12/2012: Hellboy in Hell #1 - 28,096
12/2012: Hellboy in Hell #2 - 21,010 (-25.2%)
01/2012: -
02/2012: Hellboy in Hell #3 - 23,845 (+13.5%)
03/2012: Hellboy in Hell #4 - 23,982 (+0.6%)
04/2012-11/2013:-
12/2013: Hellboy in Hell #5 - 21,026 (-14.1%)

Was there really supposed to be such a massive gap between the first and second halves of this series? I’m not surprised about the drop in sales, retailers aren’t really going to know how many they’re going to sell.

116. Black Science (Image)

11/2013: Black Science #1 - 40,873
12/2013: Black Science #2 - 20,151 (-50.7%)

There is no better example of a new Image book at the moment, strong start, but sales halved by the second issue.

118. My Little Pony Micro Series (IDW)

02/2013: Twilight Sparkle #1 - 34,435
03/2013: Rainbow Dash #1 - 25,473 (-26.0%)
04/2013: Rarity #1 - 23,338 (-8.4%)
05/2013: Fluttershy #1 - 22,489 (-3.6%)
06/2013: Pinkie Pie #1 - 25,219 (+12.1%)

08/2013: Cutie Mark Crusaders #1 - 20,868 (-14.3%)
09/2013: Princess Celestia #1 - 22,656 (+8.6%)
10/2013: -
11/2013: Spike #1 - 20,190 (-10.9%)
12/2013: Luna #1 - 19,967 (-1.1%)

For a change, a very stable MLP book.

121. Unity (Valiant)

11/2013: Unity #1 - 60,003
12/2013: Unity #2 - 18,845 (-68.6%)

This series is currently entirely returnable, so these figures are not indicative of final sales. We’ll have a better idea when the returnability ends.

126. Saviours (Image)

12/2013: Saviours #1 - 17,894

James Robinson & J. Bone combine for a neat little alien conspiracy book.

129. Locke & Key (IDW)

12/2009: Crown of Shadows #2 - 7,707
12/2010: -
12/2011: Clockworks #3 - 8,438
12/2012: Omega #2 - 10,244

====

01/2013:
02/2013: Omega #3 - 10,130 (-1.1%)
03/2013: -
04/2013: Omega #4 - 10,466 (+3.3%)
05/2013: -
06/2013: Omega #5 - 10,368 (-0.9%)
07-08/2013: -
09/2013: Alpha #1 - 17,931 (+72.9%)
10-11/2013: -
12/2013: Alpha #2 - 16,936 (-5.5%)

The final issue, and the series ends on a high, especially as these last two issues were 8 bucks each.

130. Dead Body Road (Image)

12/2013: Dead Body Road #1 - 16,840

A new noir crime book from Justin Jordan and Matteo Scalera, hits with a decent splash. Next month will be a better indicator of sales.

134. Star Wars Darth Vader (Dark Horse)

12/2012: Purge Tyrants Fist #1 - 15,546
12/2012: Purge Tyrants Fist #2 - 13,429

====

01-03/2013: -
04/2013: Ninth Assassin #1 - 17,278 (+28.7%)
05/2013: Ninth Assassin #2 - 15,322 (-11.3%)
06/2013: Ninth Assassin #3 - 14,806 (-3.4%)
07/2013: Ninth Assassin #4 - 14,650 (-1.1%)
08/2013: Ninth Assassin #5 - 14,258 (-2.7%)
09-11/2013: -
12/2013: Cry of Shadows #1 - 15,847 (+11.1%)

A bit of a boost for the new mini series, presumably one of the last from DH.

135. The Manhattan Projects (Image)

12/2012: The Manhattan Projects #8 - 17,028

====

01/2012: -
02/2013: The Manhattan Projects #9 - 17,229 (+1.2%)
03/2013: The Manhattan Projects #10 - 17,028 (-1.2%)
04/2013: The Manhattan Projects #11 - 17,517 (+2.9%)
05/2013: -
06/2013: The Manhattan Projects #12 - 17,076 (-2.5%)
07/2013: -
08/2013: The Manhattan Projects #13 - 17,556 (+2.8%)
09/2013: The Manhattan Projects #14 - 16,881 (-3.8%)
10/2013: The Manhattan Projects #15 - 16,842 (-0.2%)
11/2013: The Manhattan Projects #16 - 16,674 (-0.1%)
12/2013: The Manhattan Projects #17 - 15,646 (-6.0%)

Not a massive drop, but the largest since the second issue, after a year of relative stability.

136. Adventure Time (Boom!)

12/2012: Adventure Time Cover Showcase - 7,478

====

01/2013: Adventure Time #11 - 10,980 (-53.6%)
01/2013: Adventure Time #12 - 20,407 (+85.9%)
02/2013: Adventure Time #13 - 22,474 (+10.1%)
03/2013: Adventure Time #14 - 22,165 (-1.4%)
04/2013: Adventure Time #15 - 21,682 (-2.2%)
05/2013: Adventure Time #16 - 21,659 (-0.1%)
05/2013: Adventure Time Annual #1 - 20,975
06/2013: Adventure Time #17 - 20,860 (-3.7%)
07/2013: Adventure Time #18 - 21,071 (+1.0%)
07/2013: Adventure Time Summer Special 2013 - 19,182 (26,278)
08/2013: Adventure Time #19 - 19,852 (-5.8%)
09/2013: Adventure Time #20 - 18,822 (-5.2%)
10/2013: Adventure Time #21 - 18,156 (-3.5%)
10/2013: Adventure Time 2013 Spooktacular - 16,920
11/2013: Adventure Time #22 - 16,905 (-6.9%)
12/2013: Adventure Time #23 - 15,635 (-7.5%)

Another uncomfortable drop, this book has lost a quarter of its sales over the last six months. It’s still selling well for Boom, but this sort of attrition is worrying.

137. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (IDW)

12/2011: TMNT #5 - 19,689
12/2012: TMNT #17 - 16,703

====

01/2013: -
02/2013: TMNT #18 - 16,172 (-3.2%)
02/2013: TMNT #19 - 16,125 (-0.3%)
03/2013: TMNT #20 - 16,084 (-0.3%)
04/2013: TMNT #21 - 20,659 (+28.4%)
05/2013: TMNT #22 - 27,759 (+34.4%)
06/2013: TMNT #23 - 17,772 (-36.0%)
07/2013: TMNT #24 - 16,484 (-7.2%)
08/2013: TMNT #25 - 17,833 (+8.0%)
09/2013: TMNT #26 - 17,322 (-2.9%)
10/2013: TMNT #27 - 17,042 (-1.6%)
11/2013: TMNT #28 - 17,045 (0%)
12/2013: TMNT #29 - 15,532 (-8.9%)

That’s the third book in a row that seems to be dropping badly out of the top tier of indie titles.

138. Ten Grand (Image)

05/2013: Ten Grand #1 - 57,216
06/2013: Ten Grand #2 - 29,241 (-48.9%)
07/2013: Ten Grand #3 - 21,858 (-25.5%)
08/2013: Ten Grand #4 - 19,017 (-13.0%)
09-10/2013: -
11/2013: Ten Grand #5 - 17,020 (-10.5%)
12/2013: Ten Grand #6 - 15,366 (-9.7%)

As I will say a few times this month, the drops are slowing down a little.

141. X-Files Season 10 (IDW)

06/2013: X-Files Season 10 #1 - 24,270
07/2013: X-Files Season 10 #2 - 16,729 (-31.1%)
08/2013: X-Files Season 10 #3 - 17,557 (+4.9%)
09/2013: X-Files Season 10 #4 - 16,999 (-3.2%)
10/2013: X-Files Season 10 #5 - 16,819 (-1.1%)
11/2013: X-Files Season 10 #6 - 15,289 (-9.1%)
12/2013: X-Files Season 10 #7 - 14,792 (-3.3%)

Dropping still, but this is still better than the X-Files has sold as a comic in years.

142. True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys (Dark Horse)

06/2013: True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys #1 - 42,613
07/2013: True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys #2 - 22,401 (-47.4%)
08/2013: True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys #3 - 19,091 (-14.8%)
09/2013: True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys #4 - 17,713 (-7.2%)
10/2013: True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys #5 - 15,687 (-11.4%)
11/2013: -
12/2013: True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys #6 - 14,762 (-5.9%)

The final issue, as sales started levelling out.

147. Star Wars Legacy (Dark Horse)

03/2013: Star Wars Legacy II #1 - 21,600
04/2013: Star Wars Legacy II #2 - 16,384 (-24.1%)
05/2013: Star Wars Legacy II #3 - 16,497 (+0.7%)
06/2013: Star Wars Legacy II #4 - 16,147 (-2.1%)
07/2013: Star Wars Legacy II #5 - 15,854 (-1.8%)
08/2013: Star Wars Legacy II #6 - 15,394 (-2.9%)
09/2013: Star Wars Legacy II #7 - 14,924 (-3.0%)
10/2013: Star Wars Legacy II #8 - 14,576 (-2.3%)
11/2013: Star Wars Legacy II #9 - 13,999 (-4.0%)
11/2013: 1 For $1 Star Wars Legacy #1 - 6,624
12/2013: Star Wars Legacy II #10 - 13,783 (-1.5%)

Relatively solid this month.

148. Doc Savage (Dynamite)

12/2013: Doc Savage #1 - 13,631

Dynamite continue their pulp hero licenses with the Man of Bronze. Not great sales though, likely to drop to four figures next issue.

150. Star Wars Dawn of The Jedi (Dark Horse)

12/2012: Dawn O/T Jedi Prisoner of Bogan #2 - 14,588

====

01/2013: -
02/2013: Dawn O/T Jedi Prisoner of Bogan #3 - 14,145 (-3.0%)
03/2013: Dawn O/T Jedi Prisoner of Bogan #4 - 13,728 (-2.9%)
04/2013: -
05/2013: Dawn O/T Jedi Prisoner of Bogan #5 - 13,304 (-3.1%)
06-10/2013: -
11/2013: Dawn O/T Jedi Force War #1 - 15,515 (+16.6%)
12/2013: Dawn O/T Jedi Force War #2 - 13,531 (-12.8%)

Not too bad a drop, I wouldn’t have thought there’d be too much movement on this series before it ends now, although Dark Horse may decide to follow it up immediately now that the license is ending.

152. God is Dead (Avatar)

09/2013: God Is Dead #1 - 26,664
10/2013: God Is Dead #2 - 15,366 (-42.4%)
11/2013: God Is Dead #3 - 14,930 (-2.8%)
12/2013: God Is Dead #4 - 13,369 (-10.5%)

A much bigger drop this month, with Hickman now confirmed as leaving after the sixth issue.

153. Red Sonja (Dynamite)

12/2008: Red Sonja #40 - 13,516
12/2009: -
12/2010: -
12/2011: Red Sonja #61 - 7,464
12/2012: Red Sonja #72 - 5,856

156, 224. Terminator (Dark Horse)

12/2013: Salvation Final Battle #1 - 13,022
12/2013: Salvation Final Battle #2 - 8,087 (-37.9%)

A new series, the first in a while. Sadly for Dark Horse, absence does not seem to have made the heart any fonder, and it’s a little dead on arrival, dropping below ten thousand by its second issue.

159. TMNT Micro Series (IDW)

04/2013: Villain Micro Series #1 Krang - 13,689 (+2.5%)

11/2013: -

Another increase, no surprise as this issue concentrates on Shredder.

160. Manifest Destiny (Image)

11/2013: Manifest Destiny #1 - 17,371
12/2013: Manifest Destiny #2 - 12,801 (-26.3%)

Not too bad a drop, but this issue has been under-ordered and sold out everywhere. This is the issue I forgot to pick-up, of course. Second print following, fortunately.

10/2013: Sons of Anarchy #2 - 14,688 (-46.8%)
11/2013: Sons of Anarchy #3 - 13,251 (-9.8%)

Another one where the drops are getting smaller, very slowly.

Last issue. One final time, this is a comic about a piece of hard candy and a cinnamon bun, that outsells Star Trek and Doctor Who.

The fourth part of Dark Cybertron keeps the upward trend going. Looks like retailers slightly under-estimated how popular this would be.

Ouch. Unity aside, things are looking a little uncomfortable for Valiant, this being their highest selling ongoing title.

Obviously this has fallen way off schedule, and I would guess a lot of this drop-off is directly attributed to that.

All figures on this chart are estimates for comics sold by Diamond to direct market retailers. They include reorders that shipped in the same month. Books shipping in the first week of a month will have more time for reorders to appear than ones shipping in the last week of the month, when reorders will slip to the following month.

  1. “Alex + Ada” and “Zero” are two Image books that I was lukewarm on at first, but really started to grow on me over the past couple of issues. Hopefully others will give them a second look as well.

  2. Yikes, what a poor indie scene!

The same 2 books at the top after all this time. This is what happens when an industry stays inbred. In Image’s case , one person’s taste dictates the entire line even though he’s likeable and sincere. Still no strangers or other sensibilities allowed is what it is year after year. For Dark Horse, “Star Wars” & “The Star Wars” tells it all, stuck in their 90’s cobwebs and dark sides.

Even though I do like one or two of these books, do top creators from Marvel and DC ensure good books and sales? Is that a good policy to frame all of “Indepenent” comics around. I don’t know, maybe they make good trades down the line. I would suggest the comics world actively open the gates more and try new people, with or without the resumes . Even in limited runs. That doesn’t mean young or hip, just some new teams and good books. Pretty sure the March/April *BIG* releases will look like this in a few months. Hype then reality over and over again.

Hoping the Independent scene moves away from this quintet of publishers this year into something else. Their approach makes Marvel look like an art house.

  3. Agreed on Zero, Dave Carter. The cover of the first issue caught my eye and, though I was lukewarm on its execution, it grabbed me enough to stick around for the second issue–and I am glad I did. Zero has gotten progressively better as its progressed, with issue 5 being a gem of a comic book.

  4. @ Dave Carter – you are spot on about Alex + Ada. I liked it from the start, but after 4 issues I’m really looking forward to more. I’m glad it’s doing okay because this industry can use a lot more drama in this genre.

  5. You should ask John Miller if you can use his numbers on Comichron.com. For the last few months, Diamond has mostly been reporting the top 400 or so, though ICV2 has stuck with the top 300 . Doesn’t make much difference on the DC or Marvel reports (other than some re-orders, digital combo editions, all-ages books and GREEN TEAMs), but it’s a huge added visibility for indie titles. Which, I know, would make the report that much longer and harder and thus that much later…

  6. “12/2013: Manifest Destiny #2 – 12,801 (-26.3%)

Not too bad a drop, but this issue has been under-ordered and sold out everywhere. This is the issue I forgot to pick-up, of course.”

    You fool!

  7. Yep, rise of Image as huge indy brand is definitely seem to be overhyped. Unless you’re high-profile Big 2 writer your title is kinda DOA.

  8. Reality is harsh , all the hype on a lot of hot titles doesnt seem to influence sales much. It is why the internet in itself is very deceiving . This is the reality of these indy books that should be the real story in all the press. All the “second printings” that happen when a book that sells low numbers does not translate to a hit every time, just people under ordering.

  9. @Jimmy Palmiotti – Dude you so nailed it on the head. This is the reality. The reviews, the second printings, the convention appearance, internet hype, etc… I wish it contributed toward a successful series, but without the pedigree (except for a few lucky ones) it’s a harsh reality for us in the trenches.

But I will continue to make books because I love ’em. It’s in my blood. It’s easy for me to say the grass is always greener on the top 300 chart, but the reality is if I don’t try then I’ll never know.

  10. This isn’t surprising. As I said in a previous comments section, my estimation based on financial analysis is that only a handful of creators are making enough money to live off their indie books alone.

Even Greg Rucka recently said that Lazarus alone wasn’t enough to pay his bills.

  11. I’m fairly certain the drop on Black Science #2 is exaggerated. I recall some controversy arising when the second cover was switched from being a 50/50 variant to 1-in-10 variant, and a load of retailers being shorted on their expected order as a result. This in turn led to the book selling for absurd amounts on eBay for a few weeks until a second print was prepared and shipped.

Or am I completely off-base? Anyone? Either way, I anticipate seeing a generous boost in sales for #3.

  12. M
The thinking of a book selling for a lot of money on e-bay is a way to prove something might be successful is decieving as well. All it takes is someone asking a high price and people think its worth more. It’s a trick as old as the hills in advertising. The reality is cost of the book to put together, and what the profit is when it comes in after the costs are paid. That number after is a measure of what the books profit really is. The variants can boost sales, but having bigger companies do this waters down the indy market.

  13. Boom needs to chill out on all the Adventure Time books. We get it that it’s a popular show but they’re diluting the brand.

Also lower the price. $3.99 is too much for a kids book (arguable) and the $4.99 price tag for the seasonal specials is too much.

  14. No Afterlife with Archie this month? Issue 3 was a little slow, but still one of my favourite new books. I would love to see more alternate takes on these characters from top tier creators.

  15. Geez, except for UNITY all of Valiant’s titles now fall below 10K in sales. How long can they stay in business with numbers like that?!?
