One of the stranger trends this month is the release of several comics based on 80’s and 90’s cult properties. The best of these, Jem and the Holograms (written by Kelley Thompson with art by Sophie Campbell) ranked in the top ten indie comics this month, and number seventy-seven on the total list. For those interested in male-led cult properties, check out Bill and Ted’s Most Triumphant Return from Boom! and Miami Vice from IDW.
This month 144 titles hit the top 300 list, which is a bit up from last month’s total of 138. Without the near ludacris sales of Orphan Black #1, sales dropped 12.5%. Overall there were 1,723,032 sales in March compared to 1,969,396 in February. This brings the average number of comics sold to 11,966 which is also down from last month’s average of 14,271. Considering the Loot Crate aided numbers of February, March still seems to be holding its own.
In terms of individual publishers, Image is in the lead with a 11.39% retail market share and a 12.98% unit market share. IDW manages to snag second place this month with a 6.51% retail market share and a 5.16% unit market share while Dark Horse rounds up third place with a 3.90% retail market share and a 3.07% unit market share. Boom! Studios manages to win out over Dynamite Entertainment this month with 2.41% retail market share and a 2.44% unit market share. Dynamite Entertainment only had a 2.37% retail market share and a 1.99% unit market share.
UK and European Sales from Diamond UK are not represented in this chart.

Given its regular nigh-dominance of the top of this chart, plus steady performance over 10% in both dollar and units shares each month, perhaps its time to have a conversation about whether Image is really an “indie” company anymore or if it should rather be thought of as part of a “Big Three” with Marvel and DC.

That has to be the biggest percentage drop in the entire history of comics. If even 1% of the people who got the first issue in their Loot Crate end up trying to find the second issue at a local comic book store it’ll probably make the chart again from reorders.

I’m honestly surprised that Mouse Guard is released in single issue form, it seems like a series that would sell much better as a complete story in those nice, big hardbacks.

There are some #1 in the pack and it would be interesting to have some opinion about them and why they are not selling more ( Con Job for instance). It would also be nice to have comment about series or mini-series ending (I think that Little Nemo is only a 4-part mini-series but I might be wrong).
But of course, thanks for your work, I’m very interested in indies sales number (as I’m not reading much of the big two now …)
I’d just like to give a shout out to the first issue of Arcadia, published by Boom!, which came out a few weeks ago. Best 1st issue I’ve read in a long, long time. Smart story, nuanced characters, lots of political sci-fi (which I love)… it’s easy for titles to get lost in the crowd, but this is worth checking out.
And, no, I’m not one of the creators, or a friend of the creators… just someone who really, really enjoyed it!

I was thinking in more general terms than the sales analysis. People use the term “Big Two” to refer to Marvel and DC all the time and I think it has become (or is at least becoming) outdated.
Although, since you’ve raised the point, splitting Image from the indie chart really wouldn’t create more work. It’d be the same number of titles, same amount of analysis, just in two smaller posts instead of one big one.
Actually, it’s still very nice that Archaia/Boom is releasing Mouse Huard in single form. It was the outstanding success of the singles (more than doubling it’s sale sbeetween issues, a miracle!) that first helped Mouse Guard be a success. And at one point, the wait beetween single issues of the same mini-series was quite long.
Those days are behind us but it’s still very nice to have at 3.99$ single issues of Mouse Guard very well produced (perfect paper, no ads, a nice format and 50% more stories than a poor produced Marve comicsat the same price).

I’m honestly surprised at the huge drop here. I was extremely impressed with the first issue! Great art, excellent writing, and a really flawed main character that works perfectly.
Just wanted to point out that the main Transformers title and Windblade are involved in the “Combiner Wars” crossover. If you want an explanation for the higher sales of both books, I’d chalk it up to the popularity of Combiners among Transformers fans. And despite the fact that it says “opening salvo” on the cover instead of “Part One”, it’s not the Opening War Salvo crossover. :)
I was also surprised (and disappointed) with the drop for Black Hood. It’s one of the best books I’ve seen in a while.
The TMNT Mutanimals mini had a surprise cameo in issue 2 from an original member that they didn’t advertise. And my favourite. I think it was his first appearance in the IDW universe. I won’t spoil who :)
Likewise, I was shocked that The Black Hood had such a high second issue drop. It’s an AMAZING comic that everyone should check out.
What’s the latest on Savage Dragon? I assume it’s around 4k?
