Here’s how EEP Universe describes the “Mx. Nomer” story:

Naomi has never felt like they knew where they belonged, caught between their Costa Rican roots and American life. At a street festival where Naomi is embarrassed by family members and friends, they retreat into a surreal world inside their mind, confronting some old magic, finding the value of a multifaceted identity, and gaining a miraculous new power!

“When I was approached to be part of Season 2 of House of Slay,” explained writer Barbara Perez Marquez, “I was excited to bring to life a story that captured some of the complexities of identity and the ways we can use them to bring forth new and exciting ways to find our place in the world. ‘Mx. Nomer’ is a story about coming to terms with who we are and the many ways we can express it. Don’t ever feel limited by who you can be!”

House of Slay’s founders echoed Perez Marquez’s sentiments. “One of my big hopes with House of Slay was that the comics would inspire people to be their own superheroes,” said Phillip Lim. “It’s not just about the heroes you read about on the page, but how that makes you feel, how it inspires you to act in your own life with your own abilities. Every story in Season 2 is a showcase for this, and Barbara’s ‘Mx. Nomer’ stands out for centering a character who is brand new to this world, discovering their power and becoming a part of the House of Slay without even realizing it. I was glad I got to make a cameo in this one and welcome Naomi to the team.”

“A fascinating part of this new season,” Prabal Gurung added, “is how the writers and artists have taken the Slay concept and made it truly global — not just in the locations but in all the new characters. House of Slay Season 1 was about our main five heroes learning how to become their true selves and fight for what’s right, but they started out as regular folks. Season 2 is about bringing more and more of those regular folks into the fold — this is the true spirit of House of Slay!”
