The Marvel Universe has found its perfect Sovereign. Deadline reports that actor Will Poulter has been added to the cast of the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 as Adam Warlock. The character’s arrival was initially teased during a mid-credits scene in the second Guardians of the Galaxy film.

Per Deadline:

Sources say [Director James] Gunn and execs began their lengthy search for the person would be playing Warlock at the end of August, with Poulter meeting along with several other actors for the coveted part. As it is common with any major Marvel property, execs and Gunn took their time with the role given how excited fans were when it was first teased. In the end, Poulter’s test was too good to pass up.

Created by Jack Kirby and Stan Lee, Adam Warlock first appeared in the comics in Fantastic Four #66. Initially known only as “Him,” the character appeared only sporadically before being revamped and rechristened as Adam Warlock by Roy Thomas and Gil Kane for 1972’s Marvel Premiere #1.

Since then Warlock has been a fixture of the cosmic side of the Marvel Universe. As the wielder of the Soul Gem Warlock was a regular foe of Thanos in the years leading up to the original Infinity Gauntlet series, and has tended to reappear any time the Infinity Gems are back in play in the Marvel Universe. He’s also appeared alongside the Guardians of the Galaxy during the Annihilation storyline, as well as the recent Infinity Wars event.

Will Poulter has numerous credits to his name. Most notably Poulter played Gally in the Maze Runner movie series. He also appeared in Midsommar and the choose-your-own-adventure Black Mirror episode, Bandersnatch.

Written and directed by James Gunn, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is currently in pre-production, with a planned release in 2023.

  1. Looking forward to Adam Warlock’s debut in the film verse! This article neglects to mention Jim Starlin, whose version of the character is the only one people care about and is the basis for all Warlock stories during the past 45 years.
