Among the many new and revamped publishers in comics who are marching onwards, despite These Uncertain Times, Heavy Metal continues to expand with new media. Today they’ve released Beyond Kuiper: The Galactic Star Alliance, a prose novel with an enhanced audio component.

The SF novel, planned as the first of 10, was co-written by Heavy Metal CEO Matthew Medney and Lockheed Martin Aerospace engineer John Connelly. Medney has written many graphic novels before but this is his first prose work, as well as the first prose novel from Heavy Metal. The logline:

While on loan to CERN, a catastrophe of unimaginable proportions leaves astrophysicist Bernard Hubert as the sole survivor. While the scientific community and world looks to him for answers, he states the unthinkable: “It has to be aliens.” Unacceptable to the world, the Hubert family is under investigation and their name tarnished. Disgraced and shunned, Bernard claws his way back into society with his new company C.O.R.E. where he works tirelessly to design an engine capable of interstellar travel. Follow Bernard on his road to redemption and discovery in this ensemble cast of futurism, space travel, and the fate of our species.

The book is also available in an enhanced audio version on Audible, with voices by Dylan Sprouse (All-Wise Meadery & Sun Eater) voicing Odian Spek; George C. Romero (Romero Pictures) voicing Tordok; and Kyle Perrin (Another Kingdom: Season 3 and The Cold War: What We Saw) who also sound designed, narrating the majority of the voices and book and scoring the audiobook alongside Matt Medney.

And exclusively for The Beat here is a video about the making of the audiobook with Perrin explaining the hows and whys.
