We’re less than 3 months away from the release of the much anticipated Captain Marvel. Between the new trailer and comic variants in February, expect promotion to be in full swing. Case in point, Hasbro unveiling of its upcoming Captain Marvel toys and merchandise.
Only a few short years fans (and even Mark Ruffalo) criticized noticeable dearth of Black Widow Age of Ultron toys supposedly due to an executive’s misconception that girl toys do not sell. Iron Man 3 writer/director Shane Black even revealed in an interview that Rebecca Hall’s character Maya Hansen was originally intended as the main villain but was changed due to a memo that told him that “women don’t sell toys.” The predominant assumption is that these misguided decisions came from Marvel Entertainment chairmna Ike Perlmutter given his toy industry background. The late/great Dwayne McDuffie repeatedly said that despite being a ratings hit eclipsed only by the mighty Pokémon, no company would license Static Shock products because they believed black superheroes aren’t nearly as lucrative as mainstream superheroes i.e. white superheroes which ultimately killed the show. Cut to 2018 when you’re pretty much guaranteed to find a Static Shock cosplayer at every convention and Black Panther grosses $1 billion worldwide.
Moreover according to reports, 2015-2017 saw female hero toy sales exceed those of the entire previous decade thanks in large part to the tremendous success of Wonder Woman for Warner Bros. and Mattel in 2017. With female superheroes can transcend traditional demographics, hopefully this positive trend can continue. Let’s see the Black Widow products when the character’s solo film is released down the line.
I can’t help but notice Carol’s cat Goose featured prominently in many of the tie-ins. Could Goose possibly be the breakout star of the film akin to Baby Groot from Guardians of the Galaxy? Time will tell. Fans are speculating that like in the comics, Carol’s cat will actually turn out to be an alien. Seeing Goose in hi-tech bondage in the Marvel Legends Nick Fury figure, that theory is tracking and more and more. Perhaps a Skrull disguised as the beloved feline?
