Releasing in a collaborative effort with Toho International, Marvel Comics has announced Godzilla: The Original Years Omnibus, an upcoming collection featuring their original 1977 comics run of Godzilla. This special remaster will mark the first time the comic is reprinted in color and will showcase a captivating cover designed by Junggeun Yoon. Additionally, two exclusive variants for the direct market will be available, featuring Herb Trimpe’s iconic ‘First Issue’ and ‘War of the Giants’ covers.

The series was originally written by Moon Knight’s original co-creator Doug Moench, atop of being illustrated by acclaimed Hulk illustrator Herb Trimpe and original Vampirella illustrator, Tom Sutton. The original run of the Godzilla comics saw cameos from the Fantastic Four, The Avengers, Nick Fury, and even Devil Dinosaur.

Godzilla is experiencing a bit of a cultural renaissance, with Toho commemorating Godzilla’s 69-year legacy with events such as Godzilla Day along with the release of Japan’s first Godzilla movie since 2016, titled Godzilla Minus One, scheduled to hit theaters on December 1st. Adding to this excitement is the upcoming Apple TV series Monarch: Legacy of The Monsters, arriving on November 17th, which was co-developed by Hawkeye writer, Matt Fraction.

You’ll have to wait a little bit to add this to your kaiju shelf: it’s not coming out until October, 2024.

  1. “This special remaster will mark the first time the comic is printed in color”

Slight correction: it’s the first time it’s been reprinted in color. The original 70s comics were in color; it’s only been reprinted in B&W, in the Godzilla, King of the Monsters Marvel Essentials TPB.

  2. I have the black-and-white collection from a few years back. If the new, full-color omnibus isn’t too expensive, I might want it to replace the previous one.
