At San Diego Comic-Con, IDW revealed two follow-up series for their shared Godzilla Kai-Sei Era universe: Starship Godzilla: Invasion X, which will reunite writer Chris Gooch and artist Oliver Ono, and Godzilla: Revenge of the Deadzone, by the returning creative team of Escape the Deadzone writers Ethan S. Parker & Griffin Sheridan and artist Pablo Tunica.
Invasion X‘s official synopsis reads, “Although the crew of Starship Godzilla survived an initial confrontation with the Xiliens, the victory has triggered a much larger war. Facing the consequences of those actions, the crew must obtain substantial upgrades for the ship while bounty-seeking M Space Hunter Nebula Aliens close in. At the same time, the Xiliens are assembling the final components of a new cosmic kaiju weapon, setting the stage for an escalating battle across space.”
The second post-apocalyptic Deadzone series “finds the Wanderer far from the Deadzone and imprisoned by G-Force in New York City. While a scientific team investigates the captive, new details about the Wanderer’s past begin to emerge. The examination also exposes the government’s larger plans for the Deadzone and its unusual inhabitants.”
Parker says, “It’s not every day as a writer that you get to follow up on characters and settings you worked with previously, let alone ones as near and dear to our hearts as the Deadzone and its kooky mutant inhabitants. Godzilla has become a crucial part of Griffin and I in terms of our creative careers, and getting to build a rich world surrounding the King of the Monsters is the greatest honor.”
Sheridan adds, “Just like Escape the Deadzone before it, our goal with Revenge of the Deadzone is to craft not just a great Godzilla story, but a great comic book. If you have read the first series, you’ll be able to feel us taking a big step up in terms of the scale and stakes.”
IDW’s Kai-Sei Era (named for a mysterious energy source in the series) launched with the currently ongoing main Godzilla comic in 2025, issue #13 of which will be released on October 7. In the meantime, Parker, Sheridan, and Tristan Jones‘s four-issue prequel The Horror of Godzilla, which reimagines the events of the original 1954 film for the setting, will begin tomorrow, July 29.
Invasion X #1 (of 5) will be released on October 14, and Revenge of the Deadzone #1 (of 5) will follow on October 28. Pre-orders for both are respectively due by September 7, and September 21.
