The City of Townsville is….getting a preview! Cartoon Network has released some info on the new Powerpuff Girls cartoon which comes out last year. The new version of the 90s classic will be produced by Nick Jennings (Adventure Time) and Bob Boyle (Wow! Wow! Wubzy!) and includes Amanda Leighton, Kristen Li and Natalie Palamides as the voices of Blossom, Bubbles and Buttercup. Tom Kenny, who played the Narrator/Mayor.

“It has been wonderful to see this new show team bring such passion and positive creative spirit to this iconic property,” said Rob Sorcher, chief content officer at Cartoon Network in a statement. “We know that fans of every age will appreciate this new take on saving the world before bedtime.”

The Powerpuff Girls, created by Craig McCracken, hit the airwaves in 1998 and ran for six seasons. They were the star of a DC comic, and currently can be found on the comics racks in a book published by IDW. They definitely hit the sweet spot of girl power, 90s nostalgia and quirky cartoon fun.

I realize that the media landscape is moving faster than ever these days, but for something to be called “last year” before it’s even released… :p

“Tom Kenny, who played the Narrator/Mayor.”

I’m assuming that this was either supposed to follow a comma, or continue with “will reprise those roles.”

Minor typographical errors aside, I don’t see any real difference in the character designs from the old show, so that’ll be at least one less thing for people to complain about. I do wonder why the original voice actresses aren’t returning, as IMDB suggests that they’re all still active; cheaper to pay teenagers than established adults, I suppose.
