It’s finally here, the first Black Widow teaser, and the first taste of the solo film that will kick off Marvel’s Phase 4. Some might say it was too long in the making, but the Scarlett Johansson-starring superhero spy film has become a reality and will be in your eyeballs next year. Overnight, Marvel dropped this initial teaser for Black Widow and we’re just all catching up this morning so let me give you a few minutes to look at it and we’ll go from there:

And just to make it official, here’s the official synopsis, as we’re all very official here:

“Scarlett Johansson reprises her role as Natasha/Black Widow in Marvel Studios’ action-packed spy thriller Black Widow—the first film in Phase Four of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Florence Pugh stars as Yelena, David Harbour as Alexei aka The Red Guardian and Rachel Weisz as Melina.”

So what have we learned? Really, not much more than we did back at SDCC when we saw a whole lotta footage, but we do at least get to see David Harbour pop on the Red Guardian outfit, and it looks like his take on the character is a guy just getting back into the hero game after some time off – and he may get to use his comedy chops a little more than expected, which is welcome, given the likelihood for this to be a more dour affair. Also, Florence Pugh (who I’m not sure if anyone has had a more breakout year than her on the acting-front) makes her debut as Yelena, presumably Yelena Belova, the other notable Black Widow in the Marvel universe.

Is it possible Marvel might be able to spinoff the Black Widow franchise further with Pugh? Or does she possibly have a sad fate awaiting her? Keeping my fingers crossed for the former.

And hey, there’s General Ross again!

Black Widow, directed by Cate Shortland, hits theaters on May 1, 2020…so, not very long now at all.
