In Shadow Doctor #4 — which is out this week from AfterShock Comics — the book opens with an explosion of mob gunfighting, and continues from there.

You can see said mob gunfighting below, in the four preview pages unveiled exclusive today on The Beat. As you may recall from The Beat’s last exclusive preview of this same book, Shadow Doctor is a based on the real life experiences of writer Peter Calloway’s grandfather, Nathaniel Calloway, a Black man who graduated from medical school in the early 1930s. He was unable to get work or secure a loan for his own practice because he was Black, so he turned to the mafia in Prohibition-era Chicago, which was run by Al Capone. In this way, the book explores the dark side of America as well as the country’s promise.

Illustrated by Georges Jeanty — with colors by Juancho! and lettering by Charles Pritchett — the fourth issue of this series is due out this week on May 26, and you can find four more exclusive preview pages from the issue below. Enjoy!
