Today The Beat has an exclusive preview of Shadow Doctor #4, the new series from publisher AfterShock Comics that tells the true story of the writers grandfather.

Shadow Doctor has been a really interesting comic. It tells the story of writer Peter Calloway’s grandfather, Nathaniel Calloway, a Black man who graduated from medical school in the early 1930s. He was unable to get work or secure a loan for his own practice because he was Black, so he turned to the mafia in Prohibition-era Chicago, which was run by Al Capone. In this way, the book explores the dark side of America as well as the country’s promise.

Illustrated by Georges Jeanty — with colors by Juancho! and lettering by Charles Pritchett — the fourth issue of this series is due out May 26, and you can find exclusive preview pages from the issue below. Enjoy!
