This week saw the wide release of Captain Ginger: Dogworld, the collected edition of the AHOY Comics feline sci-fi series by Stuart MooreJune BrigmanRoy RichardsonVeronica GandiniRichard Starkings, and Jimmy Betancourt. The second volume of the series found the kitty crew of the Indomitable under attack by the Lumen, the alien race who destroyed the masters and led to the cats fleeing into space in search of a new home. Scattered following the attack, the crew encountered the source of a mysterious signal they’d received: a pack of surviving dogs living on a distant planet. Would the cats and dogs be able to work together against their common enemy? Or would forcing the two species to live together lead to mass hysteria?

The collection of the series is also the print debut for most of its contents. Two issues of Captain Ginger: Dogworld were published prior to the Diamond shutdown back in March, and following the return of distribution AHOY opted to release the remaining four issues of the series digitally via Comixology.

Captain Ginger is a wonderfully entertaining series, combining all the tropes and trappings of serious sci-fi with the ridiculousness of cats being cats. For a taste of what that looks like, check out a preview, exclusive to The Beat, of the full first chapter to Captain Ginger: Dogworld below. The trade paperback collection of the AHOY Comics series is available in comic stores and bookstores now.

The acclaimed saga of cats in space returns for a devastating second volume! Captain Ginger and his feline crew embark on a vast, six-issue adventure when they follow a mysterious hyperspace signal to the home of their unknown canine “cousins.” But trouble aboard ship may doom them before they even meet the dogs.

Created by writer Stuart Moore (Batman: Nightwalker, BRONZE AGE BOOGIE) and artist June Brigman (Power Pack, Star Wars novels).

“Moore wins over the series’ new and returning fans with the complex relationships of the good captain’s crew… Beautifully drawn by Brigman, fast-paced, and compelling as hell, this is one comic fans should add to their want list…It’s purr-fectly good reading! “ —Tripwire

“This intergalactic feline space story is both action-packed and full of humor.” -Albany Times-Union
