Dynamite will release MonsterVision, a comics series based on the TNT and Shudder show hosted by film critic and personality Joe Bob Briggs. The book, by writer David Avallone and artist Edu Menna, will see Briggs and his The Last Drive-in co-host Darcy the Mail Girl embark on a road trip across Texas, encountering monsters inspired by the horror and sci-fi films he frequently introduces along the way.
Avallone comments, “Joe Bob looks like he’d be perfectly comfortable starring in a Western: he’s square-jawed, handsome and tall, but he channels that into something subversive. That’s something I can easily understand and get into.” Darcy adds, “I’m ecstatic to be working with Dynamite! I’ve been a genuine fan of theirs for decades, so having the opportunity to create something with a company whose work I truly love feels incredibly special.”
MonsterVision premiered on TNT in 1993, with Briggs joining as the host three years later. It ended in 2000, and was revived by Shudder in 2018. This then led to the streamer commissioning The Last Drive-in with Joe Bob Briggs, which ran from 2019 until 2026, although more specials are planned. His 1987 book, Joe Bob Goes to the Drive-in, received a new edition from Dark Horse last year.
Issue #1 will be released in December, with covers by Dave Acosta, Kewber Baal and Robert Hack. A special edition of Acosta’s cover will be available with signatures from Briggs and Darcy, along with exclusive blind bag variants, and a photo cover of Darcy.
