Disney+ Announces New CHIP ‘n’ DALE Shorts Already in Production

While Walt Disney Pictures has created many beloved and iconic animated characters since its inception, one pair of characters who haven’t really gotten as much attention as others are the quippy chipmunks known as Chip ‘n’ Dale, who were created all the way back in 1943.
Still announcing content for the Disney+ streaming service coming in the fall, it was announced at the Annecy International Animated Film Festival in France that a Chip ‘n’ Dale animated series will be joining the already announced Pixar spin-off Monsters at Large. The series is already in production with 39 seven-minute episodes, and Disney+ even released a first-look still (see below), which looks… different. The series is being produced by Disney’s London animation team with Paris’ Xilam Animation with Jean Cayrol directing and Marc du Pontavice producing.
Chip ‘n’ Dale first appeared in 23 animated shorts during the ’40s and ’50s with the most prominent attempt to revive them being the 1989 series Chip ‘n’ Dale Rescue Rangers.  Just a few years back, Disney Junior began a new series of adventures called Chip ‘n Dale’s Nutty Tales, which must be popular for Disney to want to do more with the characters.
As you can see from the first look image below, Disney is going for a very different almost abstract take on the chipmunks that is probably more in the vein of recent Adult Swim ‘toons or even going back to something like Ren and Stimpy. Still, it’s doubtful that the different look means these cartoon shorts will involve more adult content, since kids are just getting used to animation that looks very different than older Disney fans grew up with.
