Chris Evans, renowned Captain and Ass of America, is staking out his first TV role since 2000. And his son definitely killed somebody. Or at least that’s the major vibe in this Defending Jacob trailer.
The Apple TV+ thriller is based on the eponymous 2012 NYT bestseller by William Landay. On the casting side, it boasts not only Evans, but also Jaeden Martell (one of the Stranger Things and It kids), Michelle Dockery (Downtown Abbey), Cherry Jones (The Village), Pablo Schreiber (American Gods), Sakina Jaffrey (House of Cards), Betty Gabriel (Get Out) and J.K. Simmons (you’re reading The Beat, you know his resume).
The Defending Jacob trailer sets up the main conceit: a local district attorney (Evans) and his wife (Dockery) find out their teenage son (Martell) is the primary suspect in the murder of his classmate. From the looks of things, it looks like a super tense ride focusing primarily on how the parents cope with the public appearances – and Evans’ decision of whether he should protect his son or do his job).
