Greetings, sales charts fans! It’s time once again to look at DC’s sales figures.

DC moved a total of 2.71 million comics through Diamond-NA in March over 89 different titles, up about 50K from the previous month (though on seven more titles), and more than one million more than March 2016.

Did you know that, in addition to doing the month-by-month DC and Image columns here at The Beat, your humble columnist also does sales chart column over on my personal blog (Yet Another Comics Blog)? I’ve been doing weekly snapshots of Amazon comics best sellers for several years, and just recently I’ve started a monthly look at the sales of DC’s Rebirth collected editions (here’s the one for March). Check them out!

Warning: The commentary below may contain reasoned analysis, speculation (unfounded and otherwise), opinion, and/or snark. Those looking for a more straightforward analysis are directed to John Jackson Miller’s excellent Comichron analysis, posted earlier this month over at Comichron!

Please consider the fine print at the end of the column. Thanks to Milton Griepp and ICv2.com for the permission to use their figures. An overview of ICv2.com’s estimates can be found here.

(Note that the percentage comparisons are now done with total orders including reorder activity, as opposed to initial orders as was the practice of this column under the previous administration.)

DK3 is DC’s top seller and at $6 its top moneymaker for March, but I think it’s fair to say that the multiple delays have taken a bit of a toll on the sales figures. But DC have added an extra issue to the end of the series (currently scheduled for May, but yeah we’ll see) and the collected edition(s) will no doubt sell for years to come, so I don’t think anyone is too sad.

If you were hoping tat last month’s dip below 100K was an aberration, March is here to tell you that sub-100K is the new normal for Batman. But on the bright side the percentage drops, like most of the twice-monthly Rebirth books this month, are quite mild. And next month “The Button” crossover and its lenticular covers will show up to give a sales boost.

ASB is still dropping though, losing another 5K+ copies this month. It’s hard to be too upset with a monthly $5 book selling at this level, but I’m sure DC would like things to stabilize soon please, okay?

10, 11 - JUSTICE LEAGUE ($2.99)

Odd fact that probably doesn’t mean much of anything: This is a first time since 2013 that an issue of Justice League was published in the month of March.

20 - BATWOMAN ($2.99)
03/2012: Batwoman #7 -- 49,227

5 years : + 22.6%

Returnable, so adjusted up 10% from what the Diamond-reported numbers. See the fine print at the end of the column for an explanation of why this is done.

Like many of the Rebirth titles before it, Batwoman sees a slight increase for the actual #1 issue. And if it follows suit, we’ll like see sales for the second issue drop a lot—like around 50%—and Batwoman will have the added disadvantage of a price increase to deal with…

See what I mean? Already tracking below the previous three iterations of JLA. Maybe because people are realizing that this is really Batman and the Outsiders with a Justice League name attached?

Launching big and then dropping quickly has been a pattern with the second-tier Superman titles during Rebirth.

Still doing relatively well for a Wonder Woman series at this stage of the game. Will the movie (due out in early June) have any affect on the sales of the comic single issues? History says its not likely, but who knows…?

Parts 2 & 4 of the “Superman: Reborn” crossover with Superman this month, which tied in to the Rebirth ber-plot, and the parts that contained the big revelations. Frankly I was expecting more of a sales boost. (Issue #975 was over-sized and -priced.)

07/2011: Titans Annual #1 -- 18,013
03/2017: Titans Annual #1 -- 34,878 (+ 93.6%)

A five Wednesday Month means Annuals! None are setting the world on fire, but this year’s iteration of a Titans Annual is a far cry better than the last time it had one (back in the waning pre-New 52 days). It sells 8K fewer units than the regular title, but at a higher cover price it brings in a lot more dollars (dollar rank 30 for the Annual, compared to 65 for the regular issue).

At $5 a pop these did decently dollar-wise. Not too surprising that the two specials featuring current DC comic properties did better than the two featuring current HB comic properties.

DC must’ve been pleased enough in that they have a bunch of specials closing over with Looney Tunes scheduled for June. (Kind of surprised they’re not waiting for another five-Wednesday month on those…)

Final issue of the second semester will be #12, and so far there are no immediate plans for a third.

As has been noted here and elsewhere, GA does have a life beyond the Diamond NA-served comic market, notably having been picked up by Scholastic for its book fairs (because it’s Harry Potter in the world of Batman, for cryin’ out loud!) But at this sales level it makes little sense to keep a monthly comic series going. If GA continues in some form, I’d expect it to be either youth-oriented OGNs (like the Super Hero Girls series), or a hybrid comics-prose book (like Study Hall of Justice).

New writer Richard Kadrey does not seem to have changed the trajectory here. But then, neither Kadrey nor his predecessor on Lucifer, fellow popular prose writer Holly Black, have much of a following within the comic shop crowd, and their fans (as well as fans of the TV series) are much more likely to pick this up in collected format (and for those they’re much more likely to be out of the Diamond direct market system as well). But how long until DC/Vertigo give up the ship on the single issue comic?

Teaming up with Martian Manhunter, who while not being the most popular of DC’s super-hero characters, it at least someone that the super-hero crowd is familiar with, and thus SDTU get a boost of a few hundred copies. (But it’s still the second-lowest sales for an issue of SDTU…)

The Fine Print (Disclaimers, et cetera)

(Somehow over the past several months the Fine Print for the DC column got replaced by the Fine Print for the Image column, and nobody seemed to notice! I suspect y’all aren’t reading the fine print, despite several exhortations to do so in the body of the column…)

The numbers above are estimates for comic-book sales in the North American direct market, as calculated by ICv2.com according to the chart and index information provided by Diamond Comic Distributors.

ICv2.com’s estimates are somewhat lower than the actual numbers, but they are consistent from month to month, so the trends they show are fairly accurate. Since it’s a “month-to-month” column, the comments, unless otherwise noted, are on the most recent month.

Bear in mind that the figures measure sales of physical comics to retailers, not customers. Also, these numbers do not include sales to bookstores, newsstands, other mass-market retail chains or the United Kingdom. Re-orders are included, so long as they either reached stores in a book’s initial calendar month of release or were strong enough to make the chart again in a subsequent month; or they show up in the year-end Top 1000. Keep in mind that sales for some titles may include incentives to acquire variants and not every unit sold is necessarily even intended to be sold to a customer.

If additional copies of an issue did appear on the chart after a book’s initial calendar month of release, you can see the total number of copies sold in brackets behind those issues (e.g. “[36,599]”). Likewise, any lower numbers due to returns or other factors returns will also be reflected in the brackets. Should more than one issue have shipped in a month which is relevant for one of the long-term comparisons, the average between them will be used.
Titles which are returnable have their numbers artificially adjusted down by Diamond. To make up for that this column increases the reported numbers for those titles by 10%. Which is likely also wrong, but it’s a different and likely less wrong kind of wrong, and experience has shown that this leads to sales figures which are more consistent.

Titles released under the All-Ages line and magazines, such as Mad, mostly sell through channels other than the direct market, so direct-market sales don’t tell us much about their performance. For most Vertigo titles, collection sales tend to be a significant factor, so the numbers for those books should be taken with a grain of salt as well.

Please keep in mind that raw sales numbers do not tell us about how profitable a book is for a publisher or for the creators.

Above all, do not allow sales numbers to dictate your purchasing and enjoyment of a particular comic. If you enjoy reading a comic series then go right on buying and reading that comic, no matter what the sales figures say.

** Two asterisks after a given month in the average charts mean that one or more periodical release did not make the Top 300 chart in that month. In those cases, it’s assumed that said releases sold as many units as the No. 300 comic on the chart for that month for the purposes of the chart, although its actual sales are likely to be less than that.

Opinions expressed in this column are mine alone, and do not necessarily reflect those of my employer, Heidi MacDonald or anyone at The Comics Beat, The National Organization of Rheumatology Managers, or my former neighbor’s dog Miles.

The author of this column does weekly snapshots of Amazon comic sales charts at http://yetanothercomicsblog.blogspot.com/ and tweets about comics and related subjects on Twitter at @davereadscomics (PM me there is you need to contact me).
As always, we welcome your comments and corrections below. Please try to keep things civilized.

  1. “Superman + Batman + Wonder Woman at under 40K? Could it be that there’s just too much Superman and too much Batman and too much Wonder Woman already?”

    I think there’s a simpler explanation.

The book is boring. The writing is quite amateurish, I dropped it for that reason.

  2. I didn’t knew about your blog, but sounds really cool! I love the effort you put on this tables.

Anyway is nice to see so many DC titles starting to find their foot

  3. I’d like to see DC abandon Annuals and either publish a thirteenth issue, a one-shot, or a 100 Page Super Spectacular to fill out their schedule. I know it’s largely a matter of semantics, but Annuals have run their course. While I’m dreaming, I’ll toss a Sgt Rock quarterly and a reprint of John Byrne’s OMAC on the wish list.

  4. I did read the averages charts and found them useful, I think. If I’m reading those right, it looks like most DC floppies have declined 30-50% over the last six months but are generally up over last year?

Re: the fine print. You write, “…do not allow sales numbers to dictate your purchasing and enjoyment of a particular comic. If you enjoy reading a comic series then go right on buying and reading that comic, no matter what the sales figures say.” I know that dedicated fans can save a title or at least contribute to a trend or a corporate reassessment, but this is a bit much, isn’t it? I haven’t been a fan of the company or really paid much attention for the last 30 years and when I do buy a DC comic, it’s usually a one-off, novelty, or reprint, but occasionally I’ll sign on to a series and this series will inevitably be the poorest seller and most “off-brand” of the whole line. I can see how what is a point of perverse pride for me is most probably a turnoff for the average (?) superhero comic buyer, who doesn’t want to back a losing team and is tired of having their favourite series cancelled. As a teenager, the same kind of experience drove me to follow my tastes and utimately migrate away from the Big Two, so it’s not a bad thing, but I think it’s a bit goofy to tell people to ignore sales numbers. Should we ignore your column then? :)

  5. Superman + Batman + Wonder Woman at under 40K? Could it be that there’s just too much Superman and too much Batman and too much Wonder Woman already?

    ===========================================================================================================

Thank you. It’s damn well about time someone other than me had the stones to say that.

  6. Nah, Francis Manapul just isn’t a very good writer. Neither is Hitch on Justice League. Isn’t about time we moved on from the failed experiment of letting artists with no writing experience write?

  7. Next month’s sales charts will be most interesting. That’s the month that monthly DC titles will jump to $3.99. Say what you will, but are people really going to give an extra dollar per month for Blue Beetle, Hellblazer, and Deathstroke? History shows that most people won’t pony up $2.99 for them, and how many people are REALLY gonna be excited to download a comic book they already have a physical copy of?

  8. Put me down as another who stopped reading Trinity because its boring and Justice League because of Hitch’s ‘writing’. Also, his artwork is looking really sloppy now too.

They should really cancel Superwoman, New Superman, Cyborg and Blue Beetle. Those are all pretty low.

Looking forward to seeing how Batman and Flash do next month, As well as Harley Quinn with Dini & Timms back (if it gets a bump – the last 3 issues have sold out at a few of my locals.
