Welcome back to The Beat‘s weekly crowdfunding comics round-up! Each week we’ll spotlight comics projects we think would be a great investment, whether it’s a one-shot story or a sprawling anthology. This week we’ve got crime thrillers, personal reflections against a backdrop of eldritch horror, and magical girls galore with projects like The Bones of This Place and Destiny NY Stories.

Let’s get going!

1. THE BONES OF THIS PLACE

Goal: $6666 USD
Ends: Friday, August 16 2019 12:59 PM EST
Creators: Marie Enger
Best Value Tier: $10 USD for a digital edition
The Bones of This Place is a 48 page, 9×6, hardcover graphic homage to loneliness and unwanted transformation. Originally created as an INKTOBER project for 2018, with your help it can become so, so much more.

Marie Enger of FHTAGN & LOATHING returns with a collected edition of her Inktober 2018 project, THE BONES OF THIS PLACE. An exploration of Enger’s own experiences with a serious illness and its effects on her body, THE BONES OF THIS PLACE is a horror tale in haunting black and white that captures the strangeness of being yourself and not yourself all at once in a body that no longer feels like your own. $10 USD will net you a PDF, while $25 plus shipping gets you a PDF and a gorgeous 9×6 hardcover edition with concept art and more.

2. The Hues Volume 3: EMBER

Goal: $10000
Ends: Thursday, August 22 2019 10:31 AM EST
Creators: Alex Heberling
Best Value Tier: $30 USD for digital copies of all three volumes of The Hues
The Hues is the story of Sami, a 17-year-old who has seen visions of a peculiar hexagram in her dreams her entire life. A strange apparition of the hexagram appears in the sky over Columbus, counting down to the arrival of an alien invasion that devastates the city.

Alien! Fighting! Magical! Girls! The Hues follows seven young women who find each other in the wake of a devastating alien attack. Created by Alex Heberling, The Hues is an action-packed and beautifully illustrated take on the magical girl genre featuring the kind of diverse cast we don’t often see in other superhero comics. Heberling has successfully crowdfunded two previous volumes, and The Hues is still running as a webcomic, meaning you can preview the series before diving in. If you find yourself as instantly hooked as I did and have a little extra money to invest, check out the $60 Three Book tier, which includes three physical volumes, three eBooks, a sticker, post card, and a cute enamel pin. There’s an Early Bird version of the tier available for $50 USD, but only 8 slots were left as of writing.

3. SINK: Blood & Rain – Crime/Horror GN will Break Kickstarter

Goal: $12000 USD
Ends: Tuesday, August 6 2019 11:59 PM EST
Creators: John Lees (writer), Alex Cormack (artist, colorist), Shawn Lee (letterer) through ComixTribe
Best Value Tier: $20 USD for volume 1 and 2 PDFs and two soundtracks
At last, an all new volume of the acclaimed crime horror series, SINK is here!
A woman fights for survival against murderous clowns.
A gang member has a crisis of conscience.
A family move into a luxury high-rise and come to suspect they’re in grave danger.
And a budding romance is sorely tested by the date night from hell.
Anything can happen in Sinkhill, and there are only two constants…
blood and rain.

If you’re in the market for a gruesome crime tale, SINK is there to scratch every dangerous itch. The SINK: BLOOD & RAIN Kickstarter will collect issues 6-10 of the acclaimed series in three different editions. There’s plenty of preview art and high praise for Lees, Cormack, and Lee’s work on the page, but I would suggest aiming with laser focus on the $20 SINK digital deluxe collection. For $20 USD, you’ll get digital editions of both volumes complete with scripts and essays, and two audio soundtracks composed by Jamie Fairlie.

4. Don’t Cry Witch Volume 1

Goal: $3000 USD
Ends: Friday, August 23 2019 1:00 AM EST
Creators: Mandy Robertson
Best Value Tier: $10 USD for a PDF
Don’t Cry Witch Volume 1 is a modern day suburban fantasy comic following 7 teenagers: Spencer, Remy, Evergreen, Declan, Merrik, Marissa, and Clover after an 8 legged deer cryptid awakens their inner witches. Unfortunately it’s rather inconvenient to manifest magical powers when magic and witchcraft has been banned for almost 30 years! Not to mention the serious consequences for getting caught if one is brave enough to risk it~

Get ready for that spooky season with cute cryptids and spooky ghosts. Mandy Robertson brings us Don’t Cry Witch Volume 1, a four-issue collection following Spencer Nichols’ adventures in cryptid spotting and the surprising consequences. Robertson’s art will immediately draw you in; she has a delightful cartooning style with emotive faces and distinctive features. 100 pages of her artwork set in a witchy fantasy world is sure to delight. $10 USD will get you a digital PDF, and $20 USD plus shipping will get you the PDF, a print, and two very cute stickers.

5. DESTINY, NY: Stories

Goal: $30000 USD
Ends: Wednesday, July 24 2019 12:05 PM EST
Creators: Anthology series
Best Value Tier: $10 USD for a PDF
Destiny, NY: Short Stories will be a 100+ page graphic novel. It collects 10 short stories focusing on Logan, Lilith, and the supporting characters of Destiny, NY. Each story is written by me with an amazing guest artist. Some of these stories are slice-of-life romances, others are magical dramas; some are holiday specials, and some are straight up comedy.

With three successful Kickstarted volumes of Destiny, NY under their belts, the Destiny, NY team is back with a collection of short stories exploring Pat Shand’s realm of Logan (former prophecy girl), her girlfriend Lilith (descended from a mystical crime family), and the folks they’ve brought into their delightfully weird and unexpected world. Written by Pat Shand and featuring art from creators like Liana Kangas and Rachel Dukes, Destiny, NY: Stories is a fun way to dive into the world of Destiny for the first time. Shand is an old hat at Kickstarter, and his campaigns tend to be safe bets.
