Eisner Award-winning author, publisher, animator, graphic and toy designer, and comics historian Craig Yoe has teamed up with Clover Press for his next project, a hyper-surreal graphic novel entitled Woman & Man+. The story is autobiographical and follows an artist through romantic heartbreak, losing his home country, and dealing with mental illness as he struggles to reinvent himself and his work.

“The book has been with me for a long time and in the countries I’ve lived. Its secret origin was in NYC, pages were first drawn in Berlin, it continued in Spain’s Canary Islands, and was consummated here in the Philippines,” said Yoe. “It’s the culmination of a lifetime of studying cartooning history and my deeply personal look at comics, art–and life’s lunacy.”

Clover Press publisher Hank Kanalz said, “Woman & Man+ has a revolutionary approach that breaks all the rules of conventional comic storytelling—think Steranko meets Hieronymus Bosch by way of R. Crumb and Dali. You can’t look away—and we can’t wait for readers to get a taste of the unique art style that’s been deemed ‘Yoe-Brow.'”

The Beat can reveal an exclusive preview from Woman & Man+, Yoe’s second-ever comic, seen below. (Warning: Some images contain body horror and/or cartoonish nudity.)

Yoe made his comics debut in 1974 with Sammy Saved and Al Most, featuring cover art by Rick Griffin. His underground comix reputation is rooted in his surreal, bizarre style, though the majority of his career was spent as a creative director for Jim Henson’s Muppets, MTV, Disney, and Nickelodeon. He’s also written several books about comics history.

Yoe’s Woman & Man+ is now live on Kickstarter.
