§ Some pretty big news out of Diamond: Diamond Book Distributors has reorganized, with Josh Hayes, the new EVP in charge. Kuo-Yu Liang, who founded this division of Diamond, has been upped to Vice President of International Sales and Business Development.   ICv2 got the scoop:

Hayes will run day-today operations at Diamond Book, working with client publishers and the company’s Sales Managers on growing sales in the book channel, reporting to Diamond Comic Distributors Vice President-Sales and Marketing, Roger Fletcher.

“I’m excited to help shape where our industry will be in the future,” Hayes said.  “I’m confident that the ideas I have will bear fruit for Diamond and its roster of publishers.”

Hayes got his start at Waldenbooks, and served as National Sales Manager and Director of Sales & Marketing at Diamond Books.

In addition, I’m told that Emily Botica, formerly director of sales and marketing, will take on a newly created job of director of client relationships and trade marketing. There are other internal changes at DBD, with more people added to work with publishers and an increased focus on international sales.

Diamond Books has had some setbacks in recent years, with Dark Horse and IDW moving to Random House, leaving Image, Dynamite, Oni, and Lion Forge their biggest publishers. Hopefully all these changes will build a foundation for moving forward.

§ Tucker Stone, formerly in Sales and marketing at Nobrow has moved over to Consortium Book Sales & Distribution , as a Client Marketing Manager where he’ll work on the comics and kids book markets. Consortium is owned by Ingram, the biggest distributor in the book world, and they already distribute most of the key indie publishers, including Nobrow, Uncivilized, Koyama Press, Secret Acres, and most recently, Iron Circus.

§ Box Brown is taking time off from Retrofit Comics, the micro press he cofounded, to work on his own comics, such as that Andy Kaufman bio. Over on the Retrofit blog he wrote:

Hello! Box Brown here.  I am going to be taking an indefinite hiatus from Retrofit Comics for a while.  Jared Smith is taking over operations for an undetermined period of time.

It’s important to note that I am not dying or dead! I’m just trying to focus on my own comics and my family for a while!  Will definitely be back one day because I am a glutton for punishment!

I’ll be at a few more shows this year with Retrofit wares CAB for sure :D

Retrofit has published some of the key small press comics of recent years, including an early version of Rosalie LIghtning and Eleanor Davis’s stunning Libby’s Dad

  1. Tucker Stone was literally the best, easiest publisher rep I’ve ever worked with in my life. He made two events for the Graphic Novel of the Month Club (www.graphicnovelclub.com/start) — Hamish Steel’s PANTHEON and Lorena Alvarez’s NIGHTLIGHTS to be two of the best bookplates/events we’ve ever had.
