Welcome to another installment of The Beat’s Comics Crowdfunding Roundup! This week we’ve got an eclectic mix of projects, from new takes on superheroes to horror anthologies to a graphic adaptation of one of the most famous allegories in history. Let’s get started!

PULSAR: BLIND DATE

Creators: Van Allen Plexico (writer), Jennifer Stolzer (penciller), Jarrod Alberich (inker), Rifan (colorist), Perry Constantine (letterer/designer), White Rocket Books (publisher)
Goal: $700
End Date: December 6th, 2021
Goodies: Digital and physical copies of the comic, posters, an art book, and more

The first comic based on the Sentinels superhero novels!

Pulsar spins out of author Van Allen Plexico’s Sentinels novel series, offering backstory for a number of characters from the series in a way that bills itself as accessible for new readers. Plexico has won a number of awards for his prose work, but this will be his first full comic, and it looks like a lot of fun.

Deal Breaker #1: Supernatural Noir

Creators: Marcel Dupree & Joshua Metzger (writers), Jonas Scharf (artist), Marco Pagnotta (colorist), Brant Fowler (letterer)
Goal: $2,000
End Date: November 17th, 2021
Goodies: Physical and digital copies of the issue, prints, variant covers, and previous books from the creators

Jerry got everything he ever wanted in life. Now, he has to fight to keep it. This is a 5 issue supernatural noir.

I like crime comics. I’m sure looking back at the past crowdfunding round-ups I’ve done will make that abundantly clear. But I also like crime comics with an otherworldly element to them. This campaign, for the first issue of a five-part series, appears to be exactly that. Jonas Scharf is a great artist, having turned in beautiful, moody work on books like Basilisk and Bone Parish, and the preview pages he’s done for this book look really nice.

Plato’s Allegory of the Cave graphic novel adaptation

Creators: Plato (writer), Benjamin Jowett (translator), Gary Proudley (writer),  Mitch Collins (artist), Wolfgang Bylsma (publisher/editor), Gestalt Comics (publisher)
Goal: AU$1,500/~US$1,125
End Date: November 16th, 2021
Goodies: Digital and print copies of the book, plus other books from the Gestalt Comics library

Gestalt Comics presents an adaptation of the famous section of Plato’s Republic.

Plato is a writer I’ve heard a lot about but I’ve never read any of his comics work before, so why not start with arguably his most famous work? In all seriousness I just think this project looks really cool, and like an interesting way to bring a little philosophy to a new audience.

Awful Thoughts #1

Creators: Jeofrey Cotton (organizer)
Goal: $2,000
End Date: December 21st, 2021
Goodies: Digital and physical copies of the book, variant covers, signed and graded editions, and more

A horror based anthology series in comic format.

It’s Halloween weekend, so you had to know I would include at least one horror project this week. This campaign is for the first issue of an anthology series with a common thread/framing sequence that runs throughout. The preview images look solid, and the variant cover artwork is unsettling enough to get me to want to see what’s inside. Such is the strength of a good cover image.

Stealth Hammer – The Sci-Fi Supernatural Adventure Continues

Creators: Ryan Drost (creator/writer), Jami Drost (designer), Joel Jackson (artist), Chris Sotomayor (colorist), Dave Sharpe (letterer), Chrissie Zullo (variant cover artist), Scott Kruger (variant cover artist)
Goal: $9,000
End Date: November 21st, 2021
Goodies: Digital and physical copies of the first two issues of the series, variant covers, a coloring book, a signed copy of the script, t-shirts, original artwork, and more

A superhero adventure in a world of high-tech gadgetry and supernatural mythology. Discover the start of a legacy.

This campaign is for production of the second issue of Stealth Hammer; the first issue was successfully funded in August of last year. It looks like a fun spin on superheroics, and I appreciate that this is a young-reader-friendly project. There’s a coloring book reward! That’s so cool. There’s also some serious talent involved in production of the book, so you know it’s going to look good.
