Mike Mignola‘s Hellboy has been a cornerstone of comics since his debut in 1993 (he’s as old as I am!).  The character has survived the tumultuously shifting tides of the industry and a series of creative changes during his tenure at Dark Horse.  Now a few more changes are coming.

Today, EW revealed the cover to the first issue of the new Hellboy & the B.P.R.D. 1953: Beyond the Fences.  Drawn by series artist and Eisner award winner Paolo Rivera, the cover’s layout evokes Saturday Evening Post covers of yore. The crafty compositional twist of placing the circle commonly found throughout Post covers behind Hellboy’s head reflects his saintly status as he helps neighborhood children find lost animals.

Rivera will be joined by Chris Roberson on script when the series begins in February 2016.  For more fun comic twists on the The Saturday Evening Post design style, check out Ruiz Bergos’ DC-inspired take.

  1. Cool. I don’t buy the non-Mignola stuff though. It’s not bad, but not good enough for my cash. And there’s way too much of it.
