C2E2, Stumptown, Calgary and beyond: comics culture takes over North America

8
C2E2, Stumptown and the Calgary Expo are all far behind in our rearview mirror, and I meant to write this up last week, but even as everyone is scrambling to get ready for TCAF, I felt like this year's C2E2 in Chicago—the fourth one—finally defined it as a show that serves a local need and belongs on the comics calendar, and the confluence of a weekend when two other major shows in other categories were taking place demonstrated the strength of not only fandom but the creator contingent.

FAQ explains why Image Expo 2013 is on a TUESDAY

3
When the Image Expo 2013 was announced there were, understandably, questions about why it was on a Tuesday instead of a more accessible weekend date. And there will be panels and signings and stuff but no vendors.

Dragon*Con under fire from more professionals

As reported last week, the incarceration and legal maneuvering of accused sex offender and Drgon*Con founder Ed Kramer has led more people, including professionals, to call for a boycott of the con while Keamer is receiving money for it. It seemed to start at this year's ECCC, and before the year is out we'd expect it to be the new standard: streaming panels live from comic-cons for those who can't go but want to follow along at home. This year at C2E2 in Chicago, Twitch will be streaming a bunch of panel (Including one that includes The Beat DREDD and beyond)

Image Comics holding Image Comic Expo on July 2 in SF

For the last few days Image has been releasing ambiguous teasers of this kind. Here at his lunch presentation at the 2013 Diamond Retailer summit, Image publisher Eric Stephenson revealed that it refers to a big media event to be held on that date in San Francisco. Robert Kirkman and Ed Brubaker will be there along with many "special guests." Admission will be charged but the event is free for retailers or press.
