In an article posted to the official Star Trek website on Monday, June 14th, 2021, the cast of the upcoming animated series Star Trek: Prodigy was announced.

Star Trek: Prodigy Cast

The cast will include Ella Purnell as Gwyn, Brett Gray as Dal, Jason Mantzoukas as Jankom Pog, Dee Bradley Baker as Murf, Angus Imrie as Zero, and Rylee Alazraqui as Rok-Tahk.

These cast members join the previously announced Kate Mulgrew, who will be appearing as the Emergency Training Hologram of Captain Kathryn Janeway (and although he has not been announced as a cast member, it’s fun to imagine how Robert Picardo’s Emergency Medical Hologram might react to this post-Voyager development).

There are no humans among the main crew, but there are familiar alien species: Pog is a Tellarite, a species that was one of the founding members of the Federation, for example, and Zero is a Medusan, a species that first appeared on The Original Series and whose form can drive humans mad on sight (hence the mechanical containment suit).

Premiering on Paramount+

In the United States, Prodigy will premiere on Paramount+ later this year, with the episodes to be later aired on Nickelodeon. Kevin and Dan Hageman are co-showrunners, with Ben Hibon directing, co-executive producing, and working as the creative lead, and Alex Kurtzman, Heather Kadin, Katie Krentz, Rod Roddenberry, and Trevor Roth also serving as executive producers.

Prodigy is the first Trek series geared towards younger audiences, and the third animated series, after 1973’s Star Trek: The Animated Series and the currently ongoing Star Trek: Lower Decks.

Plus, there are more Trek shows coming your way with new episodes: Star Trek: Discovery’s fourth season, arriving later this year; Star Trek: Picard’s second season, arriving in 2022, and Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, most likely also arriving in 2022.

And that’s on top of an announced (but enigmatic) Star Trek feature film, meant to be released in 2023.

Clearly, the future is Trek!
