The 2022 ‘Ringo Award nominees have been announced with BOOM! Studios, IDW, and WEBTOON coming out strong.

The pro-only final ballot will close September 28, 2022 and the award ceremony will take place on Saturday October 29, 2022 at this year’s Baltimore Comic-Con.

Fans and comic book professionals alike showed strong support in promoting the voting process on their websites, channels, and via social media.”

Baltimore Comic-Con promoter Marc Nathan said,

“The Ringo Awards administrators were really pleased with how this year’s ballot shaped up. What we have for the comics pros to vote on is a fantastic ballot with tough choices. It’s a great opportunity to check out creators and their works that were nominated with which you might not be familiar and enjoy some amazing comics and graphic novels! The fans were excited for their contributions to the final ballot, and the jurors found great titles and creators to share with you. We hope everyone, both eligible voters and comics readers, will give them a read!”

BOOM! and IDW share the most number of nominations in the book categories. IDW dominates in design (EC Covers Artist’s Edition, Jim Lee’s X-Men Artist’s Edition, Locke & Key: Keyhouse Compendium) but has a title in Best Non-Fiction Comic Work (The Comic Book History of Animation) and Best Series (crossover title Locke & Key/The Sandman Universe: Hell & Gone) .

BOOM! titles The Many Deaths of Laila Starr and Something is Killing the Children each got two nominations apiece in the Best Series and Best Single Issue or Story categories. Mamo #1, also from BOOM!, helped the publisher dominate the Story/Single Issue Category.

Laila Starr artist Filipe Andrade was also nominated for Best Artist, and Something is Killing the Children writer James Tynion IV for Best Writer. Mamo creator Sas Milledge got a Best Cartoonist nomination.

While DC has a few of 2022 Ringo nominees – the DC Pride 2021 anthology plus Webtoon collab Batman: Wayne Family Adventures and IDW-collab Locke & Key/The Sandman Universe: Hell & Gone – it is somewhat surprising to see that Marvel has nothing on the ballot but IDW-published Jim Lee’s X-Men Artist’s Edition. What does get a look in, however, is a wide variety of publishers big and small: Z2, Iron Circus, Scout, So What? Press, Source Point Press, and more.

In the two webcomics categories (Best Webcomic and Best Humor Webcomic) Webtoon pretty much dominates overall. Best Webcomic is a no-contest with four of the five nominees on the platform – Rachel Smythe‘s smash hit Lore Olympus; Leeanne M. Krecic/Mongie‘s Let’s Play; plus publisher collabs – DC’s Batman: Wayne Family Adventures (by CRC Payne and StarBite/Rhett Bloom) and Archie Comics‘ Big Ethel Energy (by Keryl Brown Ahmed and Siobhan). In Best Humor Webcomic, Webtoon has one nomination with unfins‘ Love Advice from the Great Duke of Hell.

Rival platform Tapas has better luck with three nominations in Humor Webcomics: The Little Trashmaid (by s0s2), Mr. Lovenstein (by J. L. Westover), and Sarah’s Scribbles (by Sarah Andersen).

There are three self-published 2022 Ringo nominees on the ballot – time travelling tale Blowback, by James Hereth, Rhonda Smiley and Kev Hopgood, in Best Original Graphic Novel; plus anthologies SENSORY: Life on the Spectrum and Yule: Dreadful Tales for the Holiday Season.

The Mike Wieringo Comic Book Industry Awards – aka the Ringos – debuted in 2017. The awards are named after the late artist Mike Wieringo, who passed away in 2007. Creators and titles are nominated for the ballot by a mix of fans and professionals in the comics industry – with the final voting being pro-only. The annual ceremony takes place at Baltimore Comic Con.
