Next month, AfterShock Comics will release Samurai Doggy #2. The second issue in the animal action series comes from writer Chris Tex and artist & letterer Santtos. Today The Beat is happy to debut an exclusive preview of the issue, which finds the titular character continuing on his mission of revenge against those who killed his family.

Here’s how AfterShock describes Samurai Doggy #2:

As Samurai Doggy and his robo-vulture mentor Rei set out to uncover the truth behind Doggy’s mother’s brutal murders, he first must unravel a gangster scheme within a popular amusement park – but will he be able to take down the gang, or will they take him down first?

In a statement back when the series was first announced, writer Chris Tex described a few of his inspirations for the series:

“Much of the inspiration came from the 80’s and 90’s anime that I consumed when I was a kid. Also, from games and movies about Samurai. The great mangakas like Naoki Urasawa, Katsuhiro Otomo, Akira Toriyama and Shinichiro Watanabe were huge inspirations, too.”

Artist Santtos also spoke about the influences he’s bringing to his work on Samurai Doggy:

“Regarding my art, I bring both a little bit of anime and a little bit of cinema.  In SAMURAI DOGGY, this is particularly evident. I also brought in some influence of Brazilian street art and traditional Japanese art. Both create something new to me. In the book there’s a lot of action and I want readers to feel all these movements, the energy. I’m always trying to heighten the visual elements of the reading experience.”
