Variety and other outlets share actor Ben Hardy will star in Stillwater, the Prime Video series based on the horror comic of the same name by Chip Zdarsky and Ramón K. Pérez. Hardy will play Daniel West, a formerly incarcerated person, who comes to the titular town of Stillwater after receiving a letter promising him a substantial inheritance. There, he discovers no one ever ages, dies, or leaves.
Series writers and executive producers Greg Berlanti and Carly Wray commented, “We’ve been fans of Ben’s for a long time, and we’re thrilled to get to tell this story together. There’s a toughness to him, but also something incredibly open and soulful underneath it. Daniel needs both. From the moment we saw Ben in the role, it was impossible to imagine anyone else.”
Hardy, 35, is best-known for playing Archangel in X-Men: Apocalypse, Queen drummer Roger Taylor in Bohemian Rhapsody, and Peter Beale on British soap EastEnders. Other projects include 6 Underground, The Voyeurs, Unicorns, The Conjuring: Last Rites, and The Woman in White. For his work in Unicorns, he and co-star Jason Patel received a British Independent Film Award nomination for Best Joint Lead Performance.
Stillwater ran at Skybound/Image for 18 issues and a special from 2020 to 2023. It’s not the only Zdarsky series being turned into a series on Prime, with the significantly sillier Sex Criminals (created with Matt Fraction, and starring Imogen Poots & John Reynolds) also in the works for the streaming service. Both shows will consist of eight episodes.
Zdarsky is listed as an executive producer on Stillwater, along with Robert Kirkman and others at Skybound Entertainment. The show is a co-production between Skybound, Amazon MGM, Berlanti Productions, and Warner Bros. Television, whom Berlanti and Wray have production deals with.
