At SDCC on Thursday, Marvel’s Avengers finally got a gameplay trailer fans have been waiting for. The Square Enix and Crystal Dynamics collaboration, though heavily rumored, appeared to mixed reception for the first time just a month ago at E3. With this new trailer, exclusive to SDCC attendees, Avengers gains some much needed footing.

According to Crystal Dynamics creative director and Marvel’s Avengers director Shaun Escayg, players will be able to customize their own styles of play. Although the upcoming trailer only showed the vanilla roster Black Widow, Thor, Captain America, Iron Man and Hulk, rumors are already flying about more playable characters. The most poplar theory among fans claims that a certain stretchy, Captain Marvel-inspired hero will make an appearance alongside some of the yet to be announced team. A young girl who looks just like Kamala Khan – and is even wearing a Captain Marvel shirt – can be seen just off screen during the gameplay trailer. Further speculation points out that she’s likely the narrator of the game’s first trailer.

But, enough with the rumors and onto the facts.

The SDCC exclusive Avengers trailer showed off combat for each member of the core team, beginning with Thor. Ambushed on Avengers Day, the God of Thunder smashes his way through minor cronies. It’s then that Iron Man takes the driver’s seat. In the skies, he chases his own enemies through the Golden Gate Bridge. Before long, Hulk smashes his way onto the scene. He leaps across the map and shakes the battlefield in a first true display of what the game’s combat has to offer. He battles his way across the Golden Gate before our perspective shifts over to Cap, who does what he does best: tosses that shield. Black Widow is next – but the demo is careful to quickly highlight tension between the group before switching over.

Black Widow’s job here is to show fans what a boss battle looks like as she takes out the Taskmaster. The minute-long performance “swapped from air combat to melee fighting across an impressively chaotic set piece,” according to THR. Though Black Widow is eventually successful, fans who watched the game’s previous trailer know Cap’s death is inevitable. The city is in turmoil and the Avengers are shoulder the blame, splintering the heroes.

We still don’t know as much as we’d like to – but at least this SDCC trailer threw us a bone. For more, check out our E3 coverage and speculation along with the original trailer below. Marvel’s Avengers hits Google Stadia, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Windows PC on May 15, 2020.
