This latest entry of their new “socially conscious” lineup of comics sees the award-winning game developer Zoë Quinn teaming up with veteran comics artist and Spider-Gwen co-creator Robbi Rodriguez as well as colorist Rico Renzi and letterer Simon Bowland to create a kick-ass Magical Girl Cyberpunk dystopia unlike any you’ve seen before. And now, courtesy of DC Comics, we have your first look at technological madness you’re in store for in just a few short weeks.
In a near future where humanity’s needs are provided for by a godlike A.I., it’s one young woman’s horrible job to perform tech support on it. But Cassandra’s life changes forever when she discovers a hidden digital world beneath our own, one where a group of super-powered women are locked in a secret war—attempting to break free into reality. This is more than a story about asskicking, cyber Magic Girls—it’s a story about a finding hope in the dark.
Last month as part of our coverage on DC Vertigo’s newest lineup, we had a chance to speak to Quinn about her goals for Goddess Mode, her first comic. In her words:
I’ve loved comics forever and I’ve always wanted to make one, but figured that meant I’d have to go the fully indie webcomic route and couldn’t do this book for a few more years worth of improving my drawing, so I’m thrilled that I lucked out with DC Vertigo giving me the chance to do this wild and visually dense character-driven story I’ve wanted to tell for years but didn’t think I’d get the chance [to] for many more.
