Heightened horror has made a huge comeback in recent years, mainly thanks to Jordan Peele‘s Get Out and Us, but for the most part, it’s resided in the domain of indie horror filmmakers. Last year, A24 had a relative-sized hit with Ari Aster‘s Hereditary — his follow-up Midsommar comes out in a couple weeks — and now Fox Searchlight is following suit with the upcoming thriller Ready or Not. Searchlight just released a new poster and a Red-Band trailer for a movie that very little was known about beforehand.
factFox SearchlightThe movie is directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin & Tyler Gillett, who might be known to horror fans for their shorts or for their segment in the 2012 anthology V/H/S or maybe even their 2014 feature debut Devil’s Due*.  The film stars Australian actor Samara Weaving, who starred in McG‘s horror film The Babysitter for Netflix, as a bride who agrees to spend a night in the estate of her new husband (Mark O’Brien from Halt and Catch Fire) playing games with his eccentric film, a game that immediately turns deadly. Said family is played by the likes of Andie MacDowell, Adam Brody and Henry Czerny.
(*Added later: In fact, it didn’t even click that these two guys are one half of Radio Silence, the filmmaking collective that made the most impressive segment in V/H/S.)
I have to be honest that while I have seen this title on the release schedule, I really had no idea what the movie was at all. Seeing that it’s in the vein of Agatha Christie or something Julian Fellowes (Downton AbbeyGosford Park) might have come up with.. only much, much crazier… makes it far more interesting to me.
Ready or Not hits theaters on August 23. Let us know in the comments if it’s something you might be interested in seeing.
