This September, writer Jim Zub (Champions, Avengers: No Surrender) and artist Lan Medina (Mera: Queen of Atlantis) will headline the Black Panther and the Agents of Wakanda ongoing series, spinning out of Jason Aaron’s current Avengers series.
Aaron, Ed McGuinness, and Cory Smith introduced the Agents of Wakanda in last year’s Avengers #11, showcasing Black Panther as he recruited oddball characters for his new secret Avengers team. The team features Black Panther, General Okoye of Wakanda, Janet Van Dyne, Ka-Zar, and Gorilla-Man.
Speaking to Marvel.com, Zub said, “It’s over-the-top action and unexpected twists with a cast of characters pulled from strange places in the Marvel Comics canon. This is a strike force of misfits and monsters tasked with defending humanity and that gives me the freedom to tell a huge range of stories – serious and sadistic, epic and emotional.”
This isn’t the only newly-announced “shadow” team that Marvel has given us. Tini Howard and German Peralta’s Strikeforce, also coming out this September, is billed as a team that does “the dirty jobs the Avengers and other Marvel heroes can’t do!”
Zub went on to describe Medina’s artwork, saying, “I’m writing really wild stuff – huge action set pieces that offer a lot of artistic challenges and Lan is knocking each one right back at us with the best art of his career so far. When he works this hard on the book, it encourages me to dig down even deeper and make sure the stories we’re telling are worthy of that artwork.”
Readers of Avengers will know that a certain member of this team is carrying a huge secret, so it looks like this title will be exploring the ramifications of that secret. We’ll find out soon!
Black Panther and the Agenda of Wakanda #1 hits shelves this September. Check out the issue’s main cover by Jorge Molina, and the variant by Leinil Francis Yu below.
I suppose this was inevitable.
