Angelina Jolie is reportedly in talks to make her Marvel debut, which would mark another major franchise off on her extensive list of films. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Jolie is in talks to join The Eternals, which is currently in development under the directorial guidance of award-winning indie director Chloe Zao. This is big news not just for the MCU, but for Jolie herself; it would be her first superhero flick, though not her first comic book movie. As noted by THR, she starred in the 2007 adaptation of Mark Millar’s Wanted.
The Eternals is based on the Jack Kirby-created title about near-human beings that are an offshoot of the evolutionary process that created sentient life on Earth. The alien Celestials who created the Eternals intended for them to defend Earth, which they do — against their destructive counterparts, the Deviants. The Eternals first appeared in Marvel Comics in 1976.
Thus far, there are no details about the forthcoming plot of Marvel Studios’ The Eternals. However, sources reportedly told THR that there will be a love story between Ikaris, who is fueled by cosmic energy, and Sersi, who thrills to living and moving among human beings.
As of this time, it’s unclear who Jolie will play in the film, if she is actually cast. She currently has a relationship with Marvel’s parent company, Disney, and is slated to reprise her role as Maleficent in Maleficent: Mistress of Evil, a sequel to the 2014 film that is slated to hit theaters next year. She is also a producer and star in the animation/live-action hybrid film, The One and Only Ivan.
Marvel has not commented on rumors of Jolie’s casting.

  1. Likely Sersi, as Marvel always casts their leads first, though I find that a tad disappointing as I was hoping the role would go to a WOC. I’d seen Constance Wu suggested and I liked that idea: fits the usual Marvel Studios pick of rising stars that haven’t yet peaked.
