The highly-anticipated reboot of the 80’s classic from Eisner Award-winning author and executive produce Noelle Stevenson just released the first teaser trailer for She-Ra and the Princesses of Power animated series. Anyone attending NYCC be sure to attend the She-Ra panel Thursday October 4 at the Hammerstein Ballroom at 3PM. And set your calendars for November 16 when the first season debuts on Netflix!
She-Ra and the Princesses of Power is the story of an orphan named Adora (Carrero), who leaves behind her former life in the evil Horde when she discovers a magic sword that transforms her into the mythical warrior princess She-Ra. Along the way, she finds a new family in the Rebellion as she unites a group of magical princesses in the ultimate fight against evil.
Noelle Stevenson and two other women involved in sci-fi, fantasy and comics were interviewed on NPR’s “1A” this morning. This discussed the “pushback” they have faced. According to the show’s notes:
“This pushback isn’t limited to the world of novels. The fans behind this year’s “Comicsgate” have launched a coordinated effort to blacklist “left-leaning” comics writers – nearly all of whom are women or people of color. The directors and actors behind the latest Star Wars films have received a torrent of abuse, some of which was vitriolic enough to force actresses Daisy Ridley and Kelly Marie Tran off of social media. There was even an uproar over the character design in Netflix’s upcoming reboot of “She-Ra: Princess of Power” (specifically, the complaint that She-Ra isn’t sexy enough).”
Seek out the interview and give it a listen.
It’s “For the *honor* of Grayskull.”
“By the power of Grayskull” is the other guy.
I don’t understand why they didn’t commission a separate “hotter and sexier” version of She-Ra for [adult swim] at the same time to circumvent all this controversy.
Base it off of the recent “mature” DC Comics version of He-Man.
That way you can get the “girl power” version on Netflix and the version for older fans on [adult swim] and you avoid a lot of the controversy.
But either way that new character design looks awful.
I like the girl on Youtube who claimed that this She-Ra looks like Ben 10.
“I don’t understand why they didn’t commission a separate “hotter and sexier” version of She-Ra for [adult swim] at the same time to circumvent all this controversy.”
Probably because this is aimed at young girls, not at teenage boys who already have Vampirella and Lara Croft to drool over.
