13th Doctor Who Collectible Barbie Doll Hits Shelves for the Holidays

In all the excitement and post-NYCC recovery, the announcement of Barbie doll based on the 13th Doctor played by actress Jodie Whittaker may have fallen through the cracks. This isn’t the first time Mattel has cross promoted its Barbie brand with popular nerd culture such as the collectible Barbie Wonder Woman doll just last year.

Indeed, between the “Dads Who Play Barbie” marketing campaign and now this, the Barbie brand definitely is extending beyond its traditional demographic.

Of course, this Doctor Who Barbie dolls drawn its share of criticism regarding the toy design, specifically “overly feminine” and curvy body, a critique that is all too familiar with the Barbie brand. Ironic given that Barbie created the new Barbie body types (original, tall, petite, and curvy) to address said criticisms.

BBC Studios and Mattel have partnered to release the first ever Doctor Who Limited Edition Barbie doll. It has been created in celebration of the new season of Doctor Who, starring Jodie Whittaker, which premiered on BBC AMERICA, Sunday, October 7 at 1.45pm ET followed by a special encore in its regular primetime slot on Sunday nights at 8pm ET.

 

Pre-sale of the doll starts today, October 7, 2018 at midnight ET – available at hottopic.com, barbie.com and bbcshop.com – with the Doctor Who Barbie hitting stores on December 3, 2018. Hot Topic are the exclusive brick and mortar retailer in North America.

With sonic screwdriver in hand, this collectable Barbie doll is fully posable and sculpted to the likeness of her onscreen character.
