Writer Leah Williams (Domino Annual, X-Men: Black) and artist Lenka Simeckova have announced a new creator-owned comic called r(ender), first reported earlier today by The Hollywood Reporter.

The book is due out in April 2019 from Lion Forge, and it will span 10 issues. The story is being described as a neo-noir murder mystery fantasy, in which photographer Emie Ocampo can share the last images of the dead, using that skill to team up with detective Natalie Bixel as the duo work to figure out a series of unsolved murders. Williams did a much better job of describing it to THR.

“I joke about r(ender); being ‘X-Files, but lesbians and magic’ or ‘seapunk tech noir,’ but really it’s a cyberpunk neo-noir story that takes place on the fraying edge between magic and technology,” Williams told THR, adding that it’s “the one story I’ve been desperately hungry to tell ever since I was a teenager. The main character’s unique magical prowess is literally a dream I had when I was 14, and just never stopped thinking about.”

Williams, for those who are unfamiliar with her work, has been writing quite a bit for Marvel’s X-Men books of late, doing the important work of bringing back everyone’s favorite forgotten character, Maggott, who appeared in a story she wrote last week for Domino Annual #1.
