Welcome to a new analysis of the Marvel sales. Reminder: I’m French, that’s why I’m talking funny. Please address your complaints to my « chocolatine or pain au chocolat? That’s the question » country.
First, TPB sales are shockingly coming back. We will take a look at Hawkeye, one of the 3 TPB golden gems of the modern Marvel, which alas is shining no more. There is no shame to put on anyone, we only look here at resulting sales and, concerning Hawkeye, there is no doubt: the series has disappeared from the buyers mind. If, in the case of Hawkeye, it was a long process (the series has been a TPB juggernaut during almost 3 years), we have some hints that interest from readers, or perhaps in this case buyers, is in fact quite ephemeral. Case in point: Gwenpool, the buzz of the internet, is already struggling with its #3 issue in the “Meow” (or any other disappointing sound effect you know) Zone (25 to 35K). Interest in the latest X-Men crossover, Apocalypse Wars, has already faded before the event’s end.
The only thing working very well so far is Deadpool. Spider-Man/Deadpool, the team-up series starring the two biggest floppy stars of the MU, is a huge success and there are several (too much?) new series starring Deadpool scheduled to appear quite soon. Once again, Marvel is trying to expand widely a line based on one popular character. So far, excepting one period in the late 2000s, they have been cautious with Deadpool, but his TPB sales are so out of this world compared to all their other series that the temptation to take some more of your money is just too great for Marvel to ignore any longer.
Although a lot of All-New series are already All-Dead, some new series based upon « secondary » characters have been quite successful so far (case in point: Dr Strange, Black Panther and Moon Knight). There is an all new unpredictability in this new catalog which is, I must say, almost captivating to see unfold. Damn, I think that was almost a compliment from the sarcastic Frenchman!
Reminder: those sales are estimates, sales to comics shops situated in North America. American comics do get sold somewhere else in their original floppy edition. Keep also in mind that it’s not because a copy is sold to a shop that it’s sold to a customer. This would be way too easy. Digital sales are not taken into account.
Many thanks to Milton Griepp and ICv2.com for the permission to use their figures. Also thanks to the Comics Zone shop in Lyon (my city in France!) for its help.
COLOR YOUR OWN YOUNG MARVEL: 5,952 120p, $10, cents per page: 8.3A new craziness has fall over the comic market: the « color your own » books, featuring black and white pages. Kids (and adults!) can go over and color the pages in themselves. Two years ago, nobody was doing this kind of book, but now they’re falling like rain from the sky.
This book is featured in the TOP 300 tpb chart, but it makes more sense to to look at it in relation to the top 300 floppy chart. Those almost 6K sales to comics shops are not bad, but it’s not the huge success the Top 300 TPB chart makes you think it is. Still though, this doesn’t change the fact that coloring books are easy money for all the companies producing them. Most of the time, there are no new illustrations– it’s in black and white and you don’t have to pay a writer for it. You only have to find a popular character to feature. This one is focused on the Young Marvels of Skottie Young, who look like cute deformed kid versions of Marvel characters.
HAWKEYE VOL. 6: 2,583 136p, $18, cents per page: 13.2Now, this could look like good sales but it’s not. This is the second volume of All-New Hawkeye by Jeff Lemire & Ramon K Perez but the TPB cash machines which was Hawkeye is no longer working. Despite the fact that this version of Hawkeye took over the numbering of its previous creative team, it’s not selling in huge quantities month after month, like it used to be. So far, Vol.5 and Vol.6 have only appear in the top 300 the months of their release and they sold way fewer copies in their first month than previous volumes.
Vol.1 used to sell in huge quantities month after month. It used to appear every month in the top 300 but its sales began to drop in October 2015 (the month the other volumes also stopped selling in the top 300) and it has stopped appearing in the top 300 since February 2016. No new readers of Vol.1 means no hope of the others volumes to ever reappear. All-New Hawkeye taking over the previous numbering was supposed to be a blessing but it turned into a curse, as Vol.5 will doubtly be picked up by people who have not yet picked Vol.1 by Fraction and Aja. Hawkeye has turned from one of the main 3 TPB cash machines from Marvel (44 K at least of Vol. 1 sold only in comics shops, that means as much copies in floppy than in TPB!) into another standard ongoing series that can sell trades upon their first month of release before disappearing.
Here are so far the first month, first trimester and total tpb sales in comics shops based on the top 300 charts only:
VOL.1: 6,145 / 12,901 / 44,587
VOL.2: 9,064 / 12,036 / 25,657
VOL.3: 7,753 / 9,522 / 13,536
VOL.4: 6,272 / 8,408 / 8,814

VOL.6: 2,583 / 2,583 / 2,583
1- 5- CIVIL WAR 2 LTD ($6 then $5) 05/16 Civil War II #0 - 183,979 [+6,696] 06/16 Civil War II #1 - 381,737(+107.5%) 06/16 Civil War II #2 - 148,403 (-61.1%)
Tons of variant covers, a big event with the same brand name as one of the most successful ones in Marvel history– all this results in big sales for issue #1, less extravagant but still very good for its #2 (especially with such an heavy price tag and double shipping). Issue #0 is picking up reorders. Nothing else to say, except that it seems that if you only have $4 in your pocket, you’ll never be able to follow an event at Marvel anymore.

4- STAR WARS HAN SOLO 06/16 SW Han Solo #1 - 152,596
That’s a little weak for such a popular character from the first trilogy. Poe Dameron did better and Darth Vader twice more (but that was at the beginning of the Marvel new Star Wars launches). It could fall behind Darth Vader very quickly.

Variant covers. Still, outstanding steady sales. TPB sales still seems regular, even if vol.2 is for the first time not in the Top 300 TPB since its release.

20- STAR WARS FORCE AWAKENS ADAPTATION LTD ($5) 06/16 SW Force Awakens #1 - 79,626
In case you were living in a cave when this one hit theaters… Despite many prestigious variants, it does not seem to interest that many people.

Two issues this month. Clearly, I don’t this one stopping with issue #25, with stellar TPB sales and very good floppy sales like that. Its Vol.2 TPB sales are higher than those of the second Star Wars TPB! Be prepared for your first Star Wars line relaunch at Marvel!

Issue #13 is a novelty: a whole 4 issue mini-series packaged in one package with a crossover with Daredevil and Power Man and Iron Fist. Of course, it’s more expensive at $10, but that’s the price of 2.5 issues at Marvel so it’s like you’re getting 1.5 books for free.
I think that book marks the first time Marvel has attempted something like this. Given that this book’s 78k sales outsold Daredevil, Power Man and Iron Fist, we could see them producing many more fatty issues like this one. 78K is an amazing number for this, a level the mini would have never reach (or perhaps only with its first issue) if it would have been released in separate chapters. This could lead to new marketing strategies at Marvel (and DC if their eyes are over what Marvel is trying). Issue #14 is higher than usual because of Civil War 2 and some variants.

Hey, Kyle Baker is signing one of the variants! Clearly, a major success, with an excellent sales behavior. The very active reorder activity just hides it but those #3 numbers are really good.
—
28- CIVIL WAR II AMAZING SPIDER-MAN LTD 06/16 CV II Amazing Spider-Man #1 - 72,556
Very close to its parent series. Too bad that it’s a #1. It will be interesting to see how all those Civil War minis behave and if they follow the pattern of the numerous Secret Wars-minis which were launched last year with their heavier than usual fall one issue after the other.
—
34- CIVIL WAR II X-MEN LTD 06/16 CV II X-Men #1 - 68,470
Almost at the same level than the Spider-Man mini, which is good. That’s Inhumans against X-Men, movie rights against no-movie rights, royalty against peasants… Apparently, the whole X-Men line will be remade just after that.
—

Significant reorder activity makes issue#1 crack the 100k barrier, hiding a little more the fact that this fall from issue #1 is quite good.
—
37- DEADPOOL VS GAMBIT LTD 06/16 Deadpool VS Gambit Ltd #1 - 65,773
In case you still have some Deadpool money in your pocket. Standard sales debut for a Deadpool mini.

This issue is written by Scott Aukerman, who seems to be a TV comedy celebrity. This or/and the Adam Kubert explain the little rebound. Not that the title wasn’t already behaving extraordinarily. Clearly, this is one of Marvel major successes. Issue #1 is once again having reorder activity.
—
42- CIVIL WAR II CHOOSING SIDES LTD ($5) 06/16 CV II Choosing sides #1 - 62,876
The solicitation text makes you believe that it could be an ongoing (« kicking-off an all-new series »), which is really weird for an anthology pitting characters from one « side » against the other. Good numbers for this kind of thing given the $5 price tag and the historic difficulty Marvel has had selling anthologies connected to their events.
—

God, I’m pretty sure I can find a sizable amount of jokes with « Poe » if I put my mind into it. So far, no reorder activity, which is not a good sign for a new Star Wars ongoing series.

The ANAD Avengers are in search of Nova’s father. Thank God, that’s the new Nova’s father. Richard Raider’s father was such a pain in the ass that I wouldn’t cross the street to find him!

The $5 annual is selling a little higher than the ongoing series, which is mind-blowing. Meanwhile, a new arc is debuting, for once without any variant or big promotion, resulting in the title’s lowest sales ever. Heavily promoting each new arc and supporting it with many variant covers does have an effect!

These very cheap reprints contain the first three issues of each of the listed series at less than the price of ONE issue. Clearly, a super bargain– one we are clearly not used to from Marvel. Who would like to buy the first paperback of a series after that, though? Better to try to catch on with issue #4 and #5. Apparently, Marvel did not gave enough information about what would be the content of these Timely Comics so a lot of shops under ordered it and did not correct once the true content was known. Clearly, it could have sold more.

This issue will contain some revelations about the Spaceknights. Too bad Dan Abnett wasn’t pick up for Rom’s relaunch. He would have done wonders and had already some pitch ideas for it.

Will there be room enough for both a Patsy Walker and a Betty and Veronica book out there in July? Be prepared for a cat fight. Start of a new arc, with variants.

Safe because of its targeted audience and its good TPB sales.

Atrocious numbers. Nighthawk will probably follow, as he’s following the same pattern.

It wasn’t very clear but even if its subtitled the incredible with a #1, this seems like the follow up of two months ago anthology, with two new stories connected to two months of the year. This hasn’t fooled comics retailers who ordered it accordingly.

Conclusion of the second arc. As a fantasy, it’s priced 3,95$, not 3,99$. This was more a technical floppy release than anything else, throwing those long awaiting 3 issues two months in a row. Compared to any other Image creator owned book, that’s not bad. Compared to other big names creators owned books, that’s bad. And for a book released by such a big company than Marvel from such big creators, this is close to a disaster. TPB sales can correct that, if their promotion is done better..
Thanks for reading until the end! I hope to see you next time. Meanwhile, feel free to comment, express your rage or your love for french sarcasm! I’ll hug everyone, no matter what. And if you’re a hairdresser, I wouldn’t recommend for you to come work in France. Love you!
“Where are the supposedly mad-crazy fans of the movie?”
I loved the movie and have every GotG comic from the 70’s on up and even I have dropped the entire line.
I wanted a cool cosmic books after the movie and Marvel has completely screwed the pooch on this.
The Rocket Raccon “joke” was played out before Skottie left.
Star-Lord has been one of the worst comics I’ve ever read.
Drax is just stupid.
The Main Guardians comic is anything BUT a Guardians comic. Bendis obviously didn’t want to write about the Guardians and it’s shown throughout his entire run.
Guardians of Infinity was good but splitting the book up with lame back-up stories probably killed any chance it might have had.
Just as Bendis and Marvel destroyed the Avengers books for me a few years back and then proceeded to completely hose the X-Men, they then completed the trifecta and have pretty much ruined the Guardians for me at this point.
I’m 50. at this point in my life, when I drop books they are dropped for good. Hopefully the new fans enjoy this stuff but, Marvel just kinda stinks anymore to me.
The only book I’m buying from them anymore is Moon Knight, and honestly? I’m kinda sick of the whole “Is he crazy or what?” thing they’ve been on for the last couple relaunches and am just buying it until it gets cancelled in 6-8 months.
dude Nova’s name is Richard Rider, not Raider. the Dick Rider jokes don’t make sense, otherwise
Used to Love the Guardians of Galaxy but they imo have ruined franchise Main book blah, Star-lord bad Drax Awful, Rocket Raccoon Pathetic Waste of trees Guardians Infinity pointless. Seems like marvel took wrong that with movie thought people wanted Bwhahahahah books or goofy takes on characters..
Wasnt a month back you where going black is beautiful on Power Man and Iron Fist on sales of 1st 2 issues then people looked at artwork and read the book and dropped it like it was infected with ebola.
Squirelgirl, Gwenpool etc seems to be internet darlings but always on buttom of charts.
Heck I even torrent my new books 90% off marvel is so bad right now even though they are free still feel like a ripoff
Sad to see sales so low on Black Widow: it’s great, one of only three Marvel titles I’m still buying (the other two are Black Panther & Moon Knight).
It’s sad that Venom sales are so low. Amazing art in this series!
So, somebody explain the acclaim the Black Panther book is getting? I’m 4 issues into it and finally dropping it because it’s talky and really uninteresting to me (admittedly Priest’s version is now “definitive” to me, but Hickman did a great job with the character.)
Seriously – -what am I missing with this new book so much so that there’s a spin-off coming?
The reason Timely Comics were “underordered” is because retailers had already stocked up on second and third prints of the issues that were included in the Timelies and we chose not to undercut ourselves. Marvel was very clear about what these were- a stick in the eye of retailers.
Thanks all for your comments!
Andrew Brown: thanks for the correction on Nova’s name. Actually, I wasn’t trying to make any joke but I’m glad to know I accidently screw one :p
Hgfh: Squirrel Girl is doing very fine, thanks for her. Both are not at the bottom of the charts.
Power Man and Iron fist is low and in danger but its sales since issue #3 don”t show that a lot of people are leaving the title. And certainly not after looking at Sanforg Greene gorgeous art! at least I hope so.
And coming here bragging how you torrent almost all of your book and yet still find some time to spit venom on it is quite….amazing. I’m pretty sure the industry needs mor epeople like you to become better.
Dave: I read the first three issues of Venom thanks to the Timely offer and I have to say that, indeed this looks like one of Ariel Olivetti best work but I’m still confused by the fact that his drawing is lacking – for me- some mouvement effects to be more dynamic. That’s weird, there is tons of sound computer effects and light effects, so why being shy into adding some mouvement lines to the mix?
Ian: I hadn’t thought about the retailer side on this one. But frankly, from my side, I know I would never have bought any issues of those titles if not for this special offer.
It’s very very dispiriting that some of the (IMHO) best books sell so poorly – Mockingbird, Patsy Walker, Vision, Scarlet Witch, Ant-Man. Books written and drawn in anything but “house style.” The man who writes Scarlet Witch is closer to the guy who wrote DC’s Starman than the guy churning out Squadron Supreme.
