DC Comics has announced that writer Tom King and artist Daniel Sampere will wrap up their epic run on Wonder Woman with colorist Tomeu Morey and letterer Clayton Cowles this December. Wonder Woman #40 will conclude the “Wonder War” storyline with a final battle between Diana and her daughter, Trinity, against The Matriarch and The Sovereign.

Here’s how DC describes the issue:

The Matriarch and her father, the Sovereign, have gathered a group of violent villains to destroy Wonder Woman and all that she represents. Can Diana and her family stand strong and protect the shores of Themyscira from the ultimate threat? Witness the monumental conclusion of the Wonder War and the historic run by Eisner Award-winning writer Tom King and superstar artist Daniel Sampere!

Following a back-up story in Wonder Woman #800 that introduced Trinity to the DC Universe, King and Sampere kicked off their run on Wonder Woman in 2023 as part of the Dawn of DC initiative. The series tied in with the Absolute Power event in 2024, but has largely remained self-contained otherwise, though a King-written Trinity: Daughter of Wonder Woman spinoff miniseries with art by Belén Ortega was released in 2025.

  1. Does this mean King is leaving the book? Or does he have another arc planned? Gods, I hope he’s done. He doesn’t understand WW at all. AT ALL. She’s my favorite superhero and I would really like her main title to be readable again.

  2. A lot of loud voices have been against this run for awhile, but I think it’s mostly worked. Glad it’s getting a conclusion and I’m looking forward to seeing who comes on board next.

A lot of loud voices have been against this run because it’s been a long badly plotted story that’s been 40 issues that should have been 3… at $4 or $5 a pop, to get what is best a mediocre story against a tiresome villain that I couldn’t give two sh*ts about. I do love the creation of Trinity, though, but am tired of time displaced characters… – it’s been done to death at DC in the past few years and needs to be benched. As mysterylad said, King doesn’t get Wonder Woman at ALL. King wanted 100 issues but I’m glad that all he got was 40, even if that was about 30 too long. Admittedly, WW is a hard character to get a handle on and she has not been handled really well since the Perez and Jimenez runs (which were a LONG time ago)… but there have been better writers (the team just before King, for example) that understand her better.

  4. Wow. And I’m just the opposite, I LOVE the Tom King run. I have never enjoyed WW more. If pressed I’d probably pick it over Absolute WW, but hopefully I’m not pressed, ’cause I love that book, too. Different strokes.

  5. I absolutely love this run, too, absolutely the top of my read pile and I’ve loved other WW runs too. Shame, I was hoping for the full run to 100, as well. I love her characterization and relationship with Steve in this story. To each their own.

  7. I would place this run in the top 10 of Wonder Woman runs post-Crisis. I thought it was a solid run, even if it suffers in comparison to Thompson’s Absolute run, which is in the running to be in the Top 5.

  8. If you don’t like Tom King and Daniel Samperes run on Wonder Woman you are insane. One of the best runs on the title ever.
